What to do between Berner Oberland and Geneva ??
 

My wife and I are spending 4-5 days in Berner Oberland (Murren/Gimmelwald area)In late June area before flying out of Geneva. Considering leaving Berner Oberland a day early to break up drive to Geneva. We had an idea to stay near Gruyers 1 night then head to Geneva ( July 3)the next day to turn in our car. We are flying back to US on July 4th. Any advice? Perhaps some other stop between Geneva and Interlaken would be better than Gruyers? According to google maps its roughly 2 1/2 hrs to Geneva from Interlaken, so I know that isn't super far. We will be staying above Interlaken so I added a couple of hrs to google maps estimate anyways. No help needed for Alps area, trip planned to this point. Thanks for any help!

A stop in Broc at the Cailler chocolate factory followed by a fondue lunch in Gruyere before spending the night in Montreux or Yvoire? Head to Geneva the next day.

Thanks for replying, I appreciate the insight, those are very good suggestions. I was also just researching the Cully area, that looks like a very unique area. Have you been there? We had considered Montreux as well. We will probably take the north route to Geneva instead of south route through France as well.

What are your interests? There are tons of places to visit between Bernese Oberland and Geneva.

Take the slower route between Interlaken area and Montreux - via the Golden Pass Scenic train - one of those official Swiss scenic trains with glass-domed panoramic windows on the last part Zweissimmen to Montreux - muchmuch prettier than the mainline route via Lausanne from Bern - check out the VIP seats!

Gstaad is about half-way and is a primo Alpine resort area much different in many ways than the Jungfrau Region.

Montreux makes an excellent stop too - or nearby Vevey - even if you go via the Broc Factory stop and Gruyere - you can easily end up in Montreux - a dreamy enough lakeside town. At night do a lake boat ride perhaps to nowhere (Swiss passes valid on the G Pass train and lake boats. You can transfer off the G Pass train to easily reach Broc Factory and Gruyeres).

For lots on Swiss trains like the Golden Pass or regular trains, etc I always spotlight the following sites: www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

VIP seats have you sitting next to the train driver's compartment so you can simulate driving the train yourself - there are obviously only a handful of such seats on each train (some are however on the rear of the train) - they can be booked on the official site: http://www.goldenpass.ch/en

Thanks for all of the replies. We are easily amused so to speak with many different interests, including Gruyere area and the castle, Broc Choc factory and also heard the market at Bulle is interesting and would fall on the day we are there. We have been researching the Cully- Vevey areas today and that area with the lakeside vineyards is appealing. The Gold Pass train sounds really cool but won't really be an option since we have a car for our entire trip and will be returning it in Geneva. I think you all have given us enough to consider. I appreciate the feedback for sure.

roads pretty much follow the GPass train route and a more scenic drive than the autoroutes.

Between Gstaad and Montreux, however, the road follows a completely different itinerary than the railway.
