What the? Why does Aerlingus not show up on my computers?

I have been looking for tickets to Italy for a summer trip for months. I have used many different sites, including kayak, orbitz. etc. Even though we have flown Aerlingus to Italy several times it never comes up at all on these sites. My thought was that the prices were too high. BUT in talking to a traveling companion yesterday while finally booking tickets, we were both on kayak.com and she said, "Well, do you see that Aerlingus has the cheapest prices?" What? Aerlingus was nowhere to be found and we were both on the same site at the same time looking for the same tickets! This was my work computer, so I raced home and looked at my home computer, no Aerlings, Deleted my cookies and still no Aerlingus. Used my husband's computer and username and still no Aerlingus. What gives? Anyone know what the heck this is about? Why can two people put in the same parameters and someone gets a cheap flight on Aerlingus and it never appears for me. (PS We are flying together out of JFK.) Huh?

hetismij Mar 3rd, 2011 07:44 AM

Are you sure you are reading it correctly? The name of the airline is Aer Lingus, two words, not one.

allisonm Mar 3rd, 2011 08:02 AM

We have flown Aer Lingus multiple times and they have never shown up on on any of the "comparison" sites. We have always gone directly to their website to price tickets.

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 08:07 AM

I just ran a quick check and Aer Lingus does indeed come up in a kayak search. Look on the left side of the screen - it's the first airline listed.

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 08:21 AM

NO IT IS NOT. It is the first airline listed on YOUR kayak.com. It is the first airline listed on my friend's kayak.com. AND yes I know how to spell Aer Lingus. I am telling you it is NOT there! NOT the first airline listed, not listed at all. NOT in the left hand column. I have been on kayak daily (once, twice, twelve times daily) for months. It is not there. I have searched their website and called their reservation number for quotes but it is not on kayak or orbitz for me. Sheesh. This is driving me nuts, especially since we usually fly them to Europe. (Can't remember if they were on kayak in years past.)

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 08:29 AM

I can't imagine that I have any particular relationship with kayak since I've never used this site.

Why don't you give the dates and destination you're looking for.

And try not to be so angry at people who are trying to help you.

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 08:36 AM

No, no, no!!!! Not angry at people helping!!! Grrr, frustrated with technology. SORRY for the misinterpretation! Not angry at all, just wondering why this is happening. VERY happy if anyone knows the answer. Again, sorry if I sounded(!) angry!!!!

sassy_cat Mar 3rd, 2011 08:40 AM

Maybe you don't have the luck of the Irish?

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 08:47 AM

Again, I'd need to know your dates of travel and destination but if you don't want to give that info here's what I did to see Aer Lingus.

Typed in kayak.com in my browser (firefox)
Clicked on "flights" in left column
From: NYC
To: FCO
Depart: April 6
Return: April 21
Clicked on "search"

I don't know why you are not seeing Aer Lingus but perhaps try exactly what I describe and see if you can see that airline.

Close your browser and open a new session before trying this.

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 08:58 AM

adrienne - Thank you. Yes, I have been doing just what you describe. But I just did it again as you describe. June 11-June 21 JFK to Venice, Rome to JFK. The first airline that comes up is Air Berlin, then Aeroflot, then Swiss. No Aer Lingus anywhere on the page at all. That is what is soooo weird! (BTW, I booked Swiss for 5 people yesterday and vowed I wasn't going to look again but just noticed that the price went down by $100 since last night when I booked. D'oh!)

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 09:06 AM

I think you have a gremlin in your computer. I used your dates and specified JFK to Venice Marco Polo and got Aer Lingus (with the little green shamrock logo). I see Air Berlin, etc. after Aer Lingus.

Don't get mad at me but I'm going to ask if you are scrolled all the way to the top of the screen.

Sorry I can't help any further but I realize how frustrating this is for you. I refer you to sassy_cat's sassy answer. :)

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 09:17 AM

Well, I thought it might be the browser. I normally use Firefox so I tried IE 32 bit and IE 64 bit and can see Aer Lingus on both of those browsers.

If you ever figure this out I hope you will post the answer.

Gordon_R Mar 3rd, 2011 09:44 AM

Works for me. Are you sure you didn't have any filters switched on (see the left hand box on the kayak site where you can specify particular airlines)? If that doesn't work, try clearing your cookies and opening the site again. Or you could try the flight search on another sebsite - tripadvisor.com has a very similar set-up to Kayak.

scotlib Mar 3rd, 2011 10:28 AM

Hi rbnwdlr,

I can see Aer Lingus in kayak searches.

You wrote about using your husband's username one time. Do you login to search Kayak? What about searching without logging in?

adrienne Mar 3rd, 2011 10:52 AM

If you don't have Aer Lingus selected in the left column (alpha list of airlines) then it won't come up with a price. Make sure you've checked the Aer Lingus box.

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 11:22 AM

Thank you for the suggestions. I swear I am not an idiot. I am scrolling and searching and everything you are saying. Now I didn't put a check in airline boxes but I have clicked 'show all' and no aerlingus. I am tending to agree with the no luck of the Irish! I have searched without logging in, searched on orbitz with the same results. I am not using firefox, but internet explorer. Could that be it? Not mad at anyone but sometimes when I say something doesn't work and then my husband or kids will say something like, "Did you turn it on?" I want to scream. Hahaha, that is what this feels like. I honestly thought everyone on this site would have a quick answer to my ignorance! I will keep checking it out but the problem with that is that I keep seeing the price go down on Swiss after I booked 5 tickets in a panic yesterday because the price was going up hourly! D'oh! Thank you sooo much for all your suggestions. I will get to the bottom of this is it kills me!!!!

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 11:23 AM

PS My husband is an electrical engineer in the computer business and he has no idea why it is happening!

RonDace Mar 3rd, 2011 11:56 AM

If you are using Internet Explorer, try using Google Chrome and see if you have the same results. I keep Chrome handy just for things like this; it is not my preferred browser, but it comes in handy at times.

rbnwdlr Mar 3rd, 2011 12:23 PM

Ha! I was able to get Aer Lingus to come up on tripadvisor! I didn't even know you could do an air search on that site! Yay, that is good news for the NEXT trip. BTW, I cannot try a different browser here at work, but will try another at home. Thanks!!! The case of the missing Aer Lingus/kayak.com/orbitz.com continues.....(clicked on select all and got Air Berlin, Aeroflot, and Alitalia, no Aer Lingus anywhere) I'm over it. Thanks again!

Sher Mar 3rd, 2011 01:03 PM

rbnwdlr. I had to try also as I was baffled by your result. Anyway, Aer Lingus wasn't even the least expensive on my search...Air Berlin was.
Good Luck.

allisonm Mar 3rd, 2011 01:29 PM

I'll be darned. I never use Kayak, but I just put in that info and there is Aer Lingus, right on top! I guess I should amend my earlier response to Expedia and maybe Travelocity!

scotlib Mar 3rd, 2011 02:42 PM

If you're interested in going with Aer Lingus, don't forget about searching at www.aerlingus.com

Sure, searching at Kayak gives you comparison shopping, but since Kayak does not sell the tickets, when you click through to the actual ticket source, the price that interested you may not actually be still available.

It's still a very weird thing rbnwdlr has seen, interesting to now know, and be glad I'd not experienced it myself (knocking some wood).

GreenDragon Mar 3rd, 2011 02:57 PM

BTW, I never see Aer Lingus on my Kayak searches, either. I always go to their site to check things, though. RIght now, I'm planning a trip to/from places they don't go, so it doesn't help :(

cw Mar 3rd, 2011 03:32 PM

rbnwdlr,

I checked on Kayak and Aer Lingus didn't come up either. I checked from Boston, both on Safari and Firefox. Then I checked on Safari from NY and Aer Lingus came up!

I have no idea why but it is a lesson to check on individual airline sites when one is looking to buy. Have a great trip.

Ackislander Mar 4th, 2011 02:15 AM

I am going to agree with Gordon_RT and bet that there is a cookie (not a virus, not malware)on your browser which remembers your preferences from a prior search in which you somehow "unmarked" Aer Lingus.

This would explain why changing browsers allows you to see Aer Lingus when your regular browser won't.

adrienne Mar 4th, 2011 03:47 AM

<< This would explain why changing browsers allows you to see Aer Lingus when your regular browser won't. >>

The OP didn't change browsers, she's been using IE. She did change search engines but that's not the same thing.

Ackislander Mar 4th, 2011 09:48 AM

No, she didn't but others (adrienne) did. Sorry for generic and confusing "you."

richam84 Jul 29th, 2013 06:39 PM

there is one scenario in which Aer Lingus would not appear as an option to select here: http://i.imgur.com/3n6u7hs.png but Kayak is still searching Aer Lingus flights. If Aer Lingus can't serve every leg of the trip ie. Kayak can't find any Aer Lingus options for at least one leg, Aer Lingus won't appear in this list because any option that includes an Aer Lingus flight would also have to include a flight on some other airline, which means it would be grouped under the "Multiple airlines" option. Hopefully that helps someone. To be sure it is searching Aer Lingus, deselect everything but "Multiple Airlines." Then click on the Details button for the options that come up, eventually you should see one with an Aer Lingus logo in it.
