Puccini, baby, Puccini. If you're an opera lover, this is the place to see the house where he was born (plaque included) and take in the atmosphere of his hometown. I found it enchanting. Let me know if this resonates with you. See my book, Travels With My Lovers, for more evocative descriptions, and also check out my website - http://www.ericaminer.com

This is a very old thread, but nice to see Lucca being mentioned again. I'd agree it isn't a place for "fly by" treatment. Detox, leisurely strolls is more like it. A stop and smell the roses, hear the Puccini kind of place.
Funny, but I recall a MET opera radio broadcast intermission of many years ago where the narrator (William Weaver?) was sitting in the main square of Lucca and describing the sounds listeners could clearly hear over the radio....kids kicking soccer balls, birds, some Italians in conversation, bells ringing....then he moved on to his main topic.
Apparently, Lucca is also the site where race car driver Mario Andretti, originally from the Trieste area, was "interned" through the war with many other displaced Italians, and for some years after, until he & his family moved to the US. His father "supered" in the local operas and Mario described attending opera as a child in Lucca.
