>bad section of Vancouver
I was there walking around after midnight and felt the urgent need to get off the street for safety reasons. I booked a room in one of those hotels, sleeping in my sleeping bag sourrounded by dirt and trash. It was quite an experience

I'm in Japan on vacation right now and I would agree with Gard and say that Tokyo felt extremely safe. And as a country with relatively low crime rates, Tokyo probably is safer than a lot of cities.

With that being said, I can't really say that I've ever felt truly uncomfortable in any of the European cities I have visited.

Reisender, I'm with you. I've traveled to 50+ countries, but Vancouver BC is the only place in the world where I have been a victim of crime. Like you, my car windows were smashed by a thief. Thankfully there was nothing of value in the car, so the thief only got a worthless sweatjacket and an umbrella. He did leave my road atlas, for which I was glad.

Sadly, the thief left no blood. DARN!!

Valletta, Malta takes the prize for me. Just spent a week in October, felt totally safe as a single female walking all over during the day and at night. Of course, there is not much going on at night, so I'm not talking late, late nights.

Tokyo, and other cities in Japan, get my vote for the places you can most easily relax and not worry about the safety issues we tourists get all worked up about.

There are parts of any city where one should thread with care - tourists included!

Hmm, I once went down the wrong underpass in Boston and I've never been so scared in my life.
London does not have teenagers waiting to pounce on tourists with guns and knives.
Sadly, they tend to attack one another and they also live in places where tourists don't go.
London and other European cities have been threatened by terrorists for decades. It's just a new lot of terrorists.
I suppose that Venice is an example of a safe city.

Strangely, I've found the three S's to be the most safe. So think of cities in :

Switzerland
Sweden
Singapore
