What's Lindau like in late autumn?

I might find myself in the Constanz area in November of this year. Lindau would be a convenient town for me to spend a night or two on my way to Munich. Is it a town with a definite (spring and summer) "season" based on sport, etc, that goes kind of dead in the autumn and winter, or would it still be a nice stop in colder weather. I was thinking of taking a ferry boat ride or two, nothing very active or sporty. Please let me know if I should pick another locale on the lake to base myself at for a couple of days. Thank you kindly.

Foggy! As soon as you come down to the lake the mist will be all around you. Not always, but quite frequently. It's calm, some like that, but I find the fog plus the short days in an "empty" town rather depressing.

Thanks logos999.

Sounds a bit glum. Is the whole lake area like that in autumn?

Yes, because it's the lake that causes the fog.
10 or 20 kms away conditions can already be completely different.

Some time ago I was talking to a colleague who was living there.

"Isn't that fog all day frustrating"

"Well, I'll be working and just look at the masses of snow uphill. I'd need a snow plough just to be able to leave the house every morning"

I guess there's something good in everything.

Brrr. Sounds chilly.

I live someplace where snow is a rarity, so it all seems very exotic to me.

Let's say I was flying into Zurich and had 3 days or so before I needed to be in Munich for the last part of my trip. Any place in the area between those two points you could recommend that might be interesting and convivial in November?

Thanks so much.

Oh, so difficult. The Allgäu is nice! as are most stops on the train line to Munich. The usual "Neuschwanstein castle tour"? is an option. Or the night at Mindelheim or a zillion other alternatives.

Please, please, can I hijack for just a moment?

We just spent two glorious weeks in Bavaria. Absolutely gorgeous!

The area around Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau must be drop-dead breathtaking in the fall.

When would be best for leaf peeping? Not necessarily this year, but perhaps next? Just generally-speaking, of course, as I know it depends on weather, cold snaps, etc. But first couple weeks of October maybe?

Thanks!

The further up you go, the more pine trees you'll find. So it may not be like you expect it to be. By the 1st week of November all the leaves will have gone. So late October would be the time, but really don't expect too much. Winter comes fast.

Bets for leaf colours? The Vosges in Alsace. The whole hill chain will be golden. If you're lucky to catch the Golden October phase with sunshine, crisp air and blue sky, it's just magic.

Thank you, logos999 and quokka.

logos - Winter comes fast. Well, catching a bit of early snow wouldn't be bad for a gal from Central Texas, y'know! Winter doesn't come here until January or February. Then poof, it's gone. That area was so beautiful. Do you live nearby there?

quokka - we spent a few days in Strasbourg last month, went up to Verdun, explored the Maginot Line, etc. Beautiful, spectacular villages along the way. I can imagine that area to be gorgeous in the fall as well.

Thanks for the tips!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Thanks, dovima, for allowing the hijack.

We were on Lindau late October early November year before last and it was so warm we were in short sleeves and summer wear, sandals etc eating outdoors - except the day when we went on the lake then we put warm clothes on because of the light rain and wind. There are tropical plants eg palms etc on the island of Lindau - it is very different just a few kms further on.

santafe,

Could you possibly be referring to the island of Mainau rather than the town of Lindau?
