What Rental Car Category is a VW Golf Wagon?
 

Trying to reconcile a rate for a VW Golf Wagon for my upcoming family tour to Iceland. The travel agent has quoted an all inclusive rate of about $1700 USD/$1500E for 13 days for a VW Golf Automatic Wagon.<BR><BR>Can't find a price for the same model of car and can't figure out which category a Golf Wagon would be - Compact or Intermediate or Standard? Have checked Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Autoeurope and none of them specifically list a VW Golf Wagon (which does make me wonder who the rental car company is?)<BR><BR>And - somewhat related - is this vehicle appropriate for 4 adults with luggage for 13 days?<BR><BR>Thanks for your help!

I don't believe the Golf has a trunk, or at least not much of one. The Jetta is the same vehicle but with a trunk. I think a Golf would be compact. Go to www.vw.com and take a look. Also, if you drive a standard, it would be less expensive.

<BR>VW Golf is deceptively large and should be able to handle 4 adults with moderage luggage as long as you're not driving more than an hour at a time.

Don't know about the car, but the rate seems extremely expensive to me. Last year, we paid just $270 to rent a car for 10 days to drive through Belgium and the Netherlands -- I think from Avis. If I were you I would check myself with some of the major car rental companies -- just call them and ask for a quote -- instead of just taking whatever that travel agent gives you. I think you can do a lot better.<BR><BR>What does &quot;all-inclusive&quot; mean? Does that mean it includes the cost of gas? Gas may be more expensive there but I can't imagine you would use enough to cost you an extra $1,000 or more. You could do this calculation too. But I would just try to find a better deal yourself.

Hi Nicki - I meant the rate included all taxes and insurance. <BR><BR>I would normally do all the travel arrangements myself, but this is a group of 8 and another family member has been coordinating the whole trip with a travel agent - to date we've only received one overall price per person. Then it looked like we'll need another car so the agent quoted the car separately and I found it really high (albeit Iceland is much more expensive than most of continental Europe) so started to check around. It's very delicate - though - the other family member has done a great deal of work and it's getting close to the trip. I'll see if I can get an &quot;apples&quot; to &quot;apples&quot; quote and if it's substantially lower try to delicately ask the TA why that is.<BR><BR>Thanks to everyone.

We were in Iceland last June and I know everything is much more expensive than Europe or the States, I looked in one of my brochures and here is a car rental in Iceland that might give you an idea of typical prices, www.carrental.is, this is through iceland excursions and you could even contact them to arrange a private excursions for your entire group, their email is www.icelandexcursions.com. The price you were quoted does seem high because you will still have gasoline expenses, good luck in your search. You will be absolutely enthralled with the island Have a great time. Deborah
