What possess people to travle to Italy in July and August?

Prices are high, throngs decend, weather is abominable... ah the pleasures of Italy in summer. The Italians know it's time to vacate the premises, how come the tourists think it's the opportune time to be there?

Just Wondering.

P.S. Don't tell me the only reason is that school is out, it's out for Winter and Spring break and depending on the area it is also out in mid June and early September.

Oh, xxx, I do get tired of your incessant baiting. What do you do, stay up all night thinking about things that irk you and then all day posting and arguing about it? Congrats, this is a new one: beating up on people for the timing of their trips. What's it to you?

PS: FYI: Public elementary and high schools don't necessarily have "Winter and Spring Break." And there are many, many professional meetings and conferences in the summer in Italy, to which many people go who couldn't otherwise afford the trip.

Sort of an a*****e comment that applies to almost anywhere, isn't it?

You have anything constructive to give?

Listen you snotty s---. There are alot of people who can only vacation when assigned to them. Senority dictates who gets the first choice. That is why I visit in August, you s---.

I have not been to Italy in July/Aug but I would guess it's the usual reason, which does tend to revolve around kids being out of school in large part, at least for Americans. Also, in many other professions, business is slower and it is easier to take time off in summer (like mine, I work in Washington DC doing consulting to the govt--Congress and lots of my clients take off in August so work is a lot slower and I can more easily get away--my peak work season is late Fall and Winter). Don't know where you live, but here kids are not out of school until mid-Sept, I think most start back last week in August nowadays. Many families who plan European vacations do not want to cram them into a harried and short Spring or Winter break, and Winter is not as desirable for weather, regardless. Many people have family holidays and other things to do around the Winter break, in particular. Even people who travel without their kids often find it easier in summer as the kids may be at some summer camp or can stay with other relatives or friends more easily. Many companies dictate seasonal vacation times, and I'm not talking about Americans, as many of the tourists in August are Europeans. In addition to the kids problem, some people find it more pleasant to travel in summer than in winter -- particularly regarding clothing and weather (yes, it's hot, but it may be more fun to stroll around in the evening in hot weather than worrying about rain or cold in the winter).

Silly question. That's the last time of year I'd ever decide to go now, since I'm able to choose better times to go on vacation. But when I was a young teacher and had summers off, I was happy to go to Italy (or Greece or Spain) every summer, even though I would've preferred to go in spring or fall. With the choice being summer or never, summer was a clear winner, and I've never regretted going.
