what part of Rome should we stay in?

My husband and I are going to be in Rome for 3-4 days early May. We would like to be in a neighborhood where we can walk to alot of the sights and have easy metro access to get to others. Would prefer an area with some charm rather than more modern. Can you please suggest an area to start looking for a hotel. Also, we are looking for a hotel or B &B with some character or great proprietors and would love suggestions--medium price range. Thanks! Karen

We stayed here and really liked it - Hotel Raffaello
https://www.hotelraffaello.it/en/

Facing a quiet side street with restaurants, grocery, gelato, shops, etc. just a few steps away that felt like a neighborhood.
Easy access to everything we wanted to see.
Loved the vibe of the small hotel. Well-run, excellent service at a moderate price.

How many euros is your idea of "medium price range"?

tuscanlifeedit Jan 20th, 2019 04:21 PM

A good place to start would be with the actual amount you wish to spend.

Yes, how many euros means "medium price" to you?

I have always loved the Hotel Modigliani, but have no idea if it meets your price criteria or not.

Probably $150-$250 USD.

On Booking.com, with applicable filters, Hotel Modigliani is showing available and within your price range. I think I would grab it. Near a metro stop, good for other transport connections, has some charm, etc.

Here's where we stayed quite a few years ago so double check current rates:

Raphael is very expensive but a stone's throw to Piazza Navona: http://www.raphaelhotel.com/index.html

Hotel Isa was much less expensive and more convenient walk to Vatican and a great bus/taxi Piazza Cavour: http://www.hotelisa.net/hotel-isa-ro...ican-city.html

Take a look at the Tram (not metro) system maps when you get a chance. https://www.rome.net/tram

DH and I liked to be above ground and used the bus system as well. Many of the stops had digital info on the signs that made it very convenient.

Have a great time kdetrav

OP: I've *almost* stayed at the Hotel Modigliani a few times, and certainly would choose to do so given your requirements. Good location, nice hotel on a nice block, in your price range and has availability. The last two times I was in Rome, I stayed at Hotel Nerva and VOI Donna Camilla Savelli; I recommend them but both I think will be above your desired price range. Modigliani is a good option.

I haven't stayed there since 2005, but Hotel Julia might work for you (or one of their adjacent sister properties). I was happy for it considering the price paid at the time, and I loved the location. But ensure that it will meet your standards, based on the reviews.

You may get a better deal on a nicer hotel if you stay near Termini. The exact dates may affect the price significantly.

The Monti neighbourhood provides an excellent chance to combine a more residential feel with proximity to attractions such as the Forum and the Colosseum. VG restaurants abound as do some attractive vacation rental apartments. Tante belle cose!
I am done. The end.

Funny we are looking for the same type of lodging as you are. Have you found anything?

kdetrav Feb 12th, 2019 07:56 PM

We went with Hotel Rafaello. It seemed like a good price, good location and great reviews. Good luck!

We really enjoyed the Trastevere part of Rome during our trip there last year. It is just on the other side of the Tiber and is virtually free of vehicle traffic. Heaps of cool bars and little restaurants. It has a little bit of a 'rough edge' but we enjoyed it and it was still easy walking distance to the main sights on the other side of the river.

The Monti/Esquilino area between Termini and the Colosseum is our preferred area to stay. Enjoyed our stay last year here https://www.icapocci.it/en/.

We were very happy with Hotel Parlamento. Great location right off Via del Corso (shopping!), many restaurants around and easy walk to all the landmarks.
We didn't use the metro, but it was close. They have renovated extensively in recent years.

We enjoy staying in the Trastevere area. We stay at Hotel Santa Maria, it may be more expensive than what you wanted. We walk everywhere from this area.
