What part of city best to stay in Bilbao?

San Sebastian-Donostia has become expensive due to its growing popularity as a destination and lack of available hotel rooms. That will be changing slightly, at least in the number of hotel rooms (+500), but three of the new hotels (with more then half of the new rooms) due to open by the end of 2017 are luxury boutique properties, so don't expect a break in price anytime soon.

I had done some preliminary looking at hotels in Bilbao, San Sebastian and Santander about two months ago and found 3 or 4 hotels in each city, and noted prices of under €100 in reasonable sounding hotels. But now those are either all sold olt (on booking.com) or twice the price. I've never seen such a jump - and in multiple cities. I frequently look at hotels when I'm first planning a trip, then go back a few months later (we are still talking 6 months out) and they are usually all still available at about the same prices. So I was pretty shocked.
Anyway, look at Hotel Niza in San Sebastian (sold out on b.com but has availability on their own site). I just booked that, and Hotel Bahia in Santander.

@ razuzin: Have you looked at my trip report? You might find some useful information there. To find it, click on my screen name and then scroll down my profile page to the section on trip reports. It's long, but there's an itinerary near the start and you can then search it for the places that interest you. And be sure to consult a good guidebook or two! I found the Michelin Green Guide and Rough Guide particularly useful for that area, along with mikelg's recommendations.
@ isabel: Beware of DCC at the Hotel Bahia! I really don't think I could have been any clearer in saying that I wanted to pay in euros.... Were you able to find my TA reviews?

@ isabel: I can only assume that you’ve had some trouble accessing my TA reviews, since none are showing new “helpful” indicators, and you haven’t added any questions / comments to my trip report ... so despite my desire to help, I don’t know how I can. Please let me know what troubles you are having in accessing my reviews and how I can help!

kja,
I did find your profile on TA, found your reviews for hotels and restaurants, gave you a helpful vote, but no section on trip reports.
That item doesn't exist in my view of your profile, maybe because I'm using a mobile device.

I can see how that would have been confusing! Unlike my hotel and restaurant reviews, my trip report is here on Fodor's
