What part of Austria to include in German trip?

We will be travelling to Germany in September. What part of Austria would you include in a three or four week vacation? We plan on going to Bavaia.

Hi M,

How long will you have for Austria?

With car?

I suggest Salzburg and the Salzkammergut for about 1 week.

So much depends on one's tastes and mode of transportation.

Traveling by car, I would second Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, and would add the Danube Valley. Salzburg is a beautiful city is a grand old castle and some beautiful churches. Salzkammergut is a lake district that pleased me as well as any in the alps, Hallstadt being remarkably situated small town. The Danube Valley is rich with history, castles and monastaries.

I second Salzburg and the Salzkammergut. Salzburg is a lovely city and the Salzkammergut it stunning. Hallstatt and St. Gilgin were our favorites.

I also second the recommendation for the Wachau Valley, if you have time. Its a lovely section of the Danube filled with quaint towns, wineries and beautiful scenery. You can boat or bike along it. We did both, parking at Krems to pick up our bikes and stopping in Spitz to take the boat back to Krems. Melk is famous for its beautiful abbey perched above the small town. Its a few hours from Salzburg (and about an hour from Vienna) but it was so worth it.

I would recommend Salzburg. I love that city - so much character. The travel should be doable. When I visited Germany and lived in Germany, I found Salzburg to be a fairly quick and easy side trip.

I liked Vienna very much. The Belvedere is a wonderful art museum, which made a Klimt lover out of me, and the tram system around the ring is a wonderful way to see many of the attractions.
