What not to miss around Trier, Germany?
I am going to be in Trier for a week and other than sightseeing in this city, what else should I not miss in the area. What villages "must" be seen? Thank you for any help.

Had you thought about visiting Luxembourg, which is nearby? Luxembourg City is quite pretty and worth a day trip.

You can go east and explore the Mosel. If you like old (800 years in the same family) castles, Burg Eltz has got to be one of the best in Europe. You can also visit Cochem and it's castle. Although I've never been there, Beilstein gets raves from Fodorites. It's easier to reach Beilstein if you have a car.
I second Lavandula's suggestion about Luxembourg City, and the country. If you have the time, travel north of the city and visit Vianden and it's castle, or head just a little further north and check out Clervaux. The wonderful Family of Man photo exhibition is displayed in the Clervaux Chateau, as well as a Battle of the Bulge museum. If you click on my name you can check out my profile, where links to my trip reports to BeNeLux and Germany are located. You might find some helpful information in the reports. Will you be driving or training? Robyn :)>- |

Bernkastel is very close to Trier and has some eye-popping half-timbered buildings. You shouldn't miss it.

Not far from Trier is Echternach, Lux. Not as far as Lux City but quite small and quaint.
Traben Trarbach, Beilstein, Bernkastel-Kues are all worth stops. We especially loved Bernkastel. Photos from our last tri |
Sorry, computer problems.

I also can recommend visiting Bernkastel and Cochem. Beautiful old towns on the Mosel. I agree that Burg Eltz is one of the best castles anywhere. The location is also perfect for a medieval castle.
