What London hotel would you select for a neat experience?

I know this is too general a question, but I would love to hear opinions on a special hotel in London. I can't define special..I guess I mean memorable, in a good way. I can't break the bank on this...I am hoping to stay under 150 gbp. Any reasonable hotel in any part of town....I am looking for help.
Thanks.

Can tell you that we loved the Rubens at the Palace. I think you can make your budget work there. Small but charming rooms/baths. Great lobby and terrific staff. The location - right across from Buckingham Palace was great for walking and site seeing. Have fun.

I think Blakes Hotel in South Kensington is very special however you can only get the smallest of their rooms at around 170 GBP.

This website offers 'boutique' hotels which are a bit special - maybe memorable. Blakes is one of them...

Please post back and let us know where you decide upon and whether it comes up to your expectations.

errrrrrr, 150 pounds may be memorable but not in the way you wish. /:-)

if you want a great hotel, I'd suggest One Aldwych, but it's spendy. It's in a fabulous location though.

The Lennox (formerly 57 Pont St) in Knightsbridge is quite nice. It's an 1800's building but the interior is very modern. It's got a hip feel and we found it to be very comfortable and nicer than what we normally experience. It's also a great location (SW1) and my favorite area in London to stay.

One hotel I loved when I stayed there a few years ago was the Thistle Hyde Park. Right opposite Hyde Park, is used to be known as White's Hotel, and was like staying at an elegant country house hotel. It has 4-poster beds in some rooms. It is a 5* hotel but you should be able to get it for under 150 GBP.

If you google Thistle Hyde Park Hotel, you get lots of links to sites offering discounts as well as to the Thistle website.

You might take a look at Topham's Belgravia, which is located right near Victoria Station. We've stayed there twice and loved it. It's built out of several townhouses, and the rooms are quirky in a wonderful sort of way. The staff are extremely helpful. You should be able to get a room for under 150 GBP.

We paid 235 pounds for our room overlooking the garden at The Goring Hotel, a few blocks from Buckingham Palace. Above what you want to spend, but you could check for any deals. We LOVED this place. It is family run, quintessentially British. Lovely room, dining room, lounges. Terrific staff. A very special place.

You're kidding, right? A great experience at a hotel in London for under $300 a night? Champagne dreams on a Sangria budget.

You could try The Connaught. It's an excellent property and they seem very reasonable in comparison to other ones in that location/level.

I think it'd probably be closer to 200 inc VAT if not slightly more, but then if you're here for a week you're only talking about a 350GBP increase which if necessary can be recovered by cutting spending in other areas.

Snoopy Dec 21st, 2005 12:09 PM

I'll second the Connaught.

I think the Rubens is a great choice for a first stay. Very helpful staff. Good location.

Check out www.londontown.com. Plug in your dates and see what kind of rates you can get. I've gotten good deals through them.

I'll put in my two pence worth for the Montague on the Gardens - it is next to the British Museum. People rave about the Goring but I prefer the Montague and the price is better

Second the suggestion for londontown.com

Another thought is to use Priceline, using info from biddingfortravel.com. I haven't done it (yet), but several people here swear by it. With your budget, you may be able to get a very nice hotel in a good area. Just a thought!

The Capital in Knightsbridge - staff very responsive, great location. They have an 800 number from USA (check their website for this) - suggest you call Reservations Manager, Nathalie, direct - I found her to be most helpful.

Tulips Dec 22nd, 2005 04:17 AM

The Capital will certainly be more than 150, but their next-door sister hotel is under 150; it's a B&B really, but lovely rooms, very friendly staff, and you can have breakfast downstairs at Le Metro. And it's only yards from Harrods. It's called l'Hotel.

marymarra Dec 22nd, 2005 04:33 AM

I'll put in another vote for the Rubens; 150 GBP is tough, but go to their website, www.redcarnationhotels.com and there are deals there; one of your other suggestions--Montague-- is also inthis group so you can compare.

Good luck,

Mary
