OK, while I very well understand that Glenn has ages ago done his Hungary trip (Hope he enjoyed!), I just cannot resist since this was brought to the top. Personally I found German to be the most useful foreign langiage while travelling in the Hungarian countryside. What I actually wanted to do here, was to make some little corrections to Polly Glots comparison of Hungarian and Finnish words:
we= mi(H), me(F)
you= ti(H), te(F)
hand= kasi(H), käsi(F)
alive= eleven(H), yksitoista(F)
live= el(H), elää(F)
see, look= nez(H), näkee(F)
make, do= te(H), tekee(F)

Not that it matters ;-)

Thanks. I don't actually know either language, as you might've guessed, although I've had some curiosity about Hungarian for a long time. I found the "information"--such as it was--in Bodmer's "Loom of Language" and in some websites via a fast search.

I think Russian is spoken by many Hungarians (due to a certain occupational period in their history), but that probably won't help you either . . . :)

German is the 1st language in Austria and the 2nd in Hungary.
