Any of the lookouts over Laga DiGarda are incredible.

I have to agree with Howards...
Emerging from the stazzione in Venice and experiencing that first view of the Grand Canal in all its glory.
It is one of my lifes most cherished moments.
It is impossible to get too carried away with Italy. I am so enjoying your posts. Please continue.

I agree, DogMother, so here's some more just for you:
*Gazing on Lake Como from my third-floor window of the Hotel Belvedere in Bellagio.
*The first glimpse of the massive duomo in Milan.
*The Botticellis in the Uffizi, Micelangelo's David at the Accademia the Bellini sculptures in St. Peter's and the Pieta in St. Peter's which literally brought tears to our eyes.
*Opening the shutters in our second-floor room in the Covo dei Saraceni and seeing the magnificent Politano hillside before us upon our arrival one November evening.
Have you seen Bailey's Venice photos? Here's the thread that has the link:

Well, this wasn't a completely visual experience, but I would say that pulling up to Positano at dusk last August was sublime. We stayed at the Poseidon, and when we settled into our room, it was just getting dark. We had an amazing view of the sea and the town, and with the lights all twinkly, the glint of the dome from the cathedral, snatches of music and laughter, and delicious smells, I swore I felt like I had just stepped into a fairytale. It was magical in a way I had never experienced before.

I also thought the vistas in Anacapri were breathtaking...

This is a difficult one to answer. A few of mine:
- A view of southern Tuscany from high on a hillside outside Montepulciano after an unexpected April ice storm, as the sun was breaking through the clouds.
- A view of all five cinque terre villages from a lookout on the trail from Levanto.
- The view from the Sienna bell tower.
- Our first sight of Venice.

I'm so glad to see this thread revived. It's one of my favorites.
I'll add one more:
Observing four nuns in habits eating pizzas in St. Peter's Square (and, thanks to a zoom lens, capturing it on film!).

I am glad this one got revived. My favorite Tuscan photo op is the famous chapel in the field near Pienza--you have all seen it in every photo book of Tuscany--and there are many. Here is a link to a fall version of that shot--it is much different in the spring. These shots were taken in mid-Oct. last year. Here is the URL.

I have wonderful photos of rome that i had taken from St peters, its a tricky walk, the stairs are steep, and the hallways are slanted, but it is wonderful once you get on the top

HowardR Feb 9th, 2004 12:59 PM

Heavens, Bob, how could I forget that one. I'm currently staring at my version of the chapel near Pienza that hangs over my desk between the pizza-eating nuns and the gondolas in storage!

Dog_Mother Feb 11th, 2004 10:16 AM

Bob,
I just looked at your pictures--loved them!

Do you know of a website and easy way those of us interested in this thread could upload our own favorite pictures of Italy to share with one another? Is the site you use one that any of us could use? I think that would be so great. I have some I'd like to share. But, more than that, I'd like to see everyone else's.

Portofino at twilight on a cool November 2003 evening, perched at a table at a little waterside cafe, she drinking tea, me a Bacardi and Coke, the sky all purple, the streets and alleyways empty, the black-turtlenecked barkeep wiping down the counter, a clock ticking.

There's a website called Virtual Tourist where people post photos and trip reports. I am listed there as "radiomom" and there are a number of Fodorites there as well. You can choose a country and see the "top sites" for that country (or city, or region, etc.)

Forgot to add -- my favorite vantage point in Italy was probably from vaporetto #1 at sunset on our arrival. Or else Piazza Michealangeo that overlooks ALL of Florence. Simply stunning.

bobthenavigator Nov 21st, 2004 02:25 PM

Dog Mother, Here is an updated version of my photo galleries. Anyone can upload to this site.

So many, but this thread had me thinking of being in MasaLubrenze on a dark rainy day. Went into town and purchased wine, bread, cheese, meat, fruit etc. and went back to the hotel by 5:00pm.

We were soaking wet, but having an adventure. A hot bath and warm clothes were wonderful.

We went out on the covered terrance of our room to watch Mother Nature's Show.

Storm grew worse and worse. Waves crashing over the beach and than over the rocky pennisular which we saw from our covered terrace.

Night had fallen and oh the electrical storm, crash, bang and wow! The waves got higher and higher. The midnight sky was a spectacular lightning show.
And across the sea was Capri. And little by little the lights went off on Capri.

And than the electricity went off in MasaLubrenze. No matter, the electrical storm kept everything well lit.

And the storm continued. Hour after hour. We had the wine, than the food from the deli and than "knock, knock" on the door.

The hotel mangement had brought up expresso, cake and fresh fruit and Lemoncello for our enjoyment. There present to us. Too beautiful. And also wonderful candles which had a beautiful aroma.

Mother Nature in all her beauty.

And Italians with all their hospitality.

Have many more "perfect moment" but this particular one was brought to mind with this thread.
