Just happened to read these posts. Visited Oslo this summer, and other capitals. Oslo impressed me as having a lot of people with a lot of major drug problems. A couple were having sex on a bench at 4 pm! Nice kid friendly city!? Also prostitutes. Zombies wandering about. Found some local shop people rude. I look like a Finn so I wasn't a " screaming American" type either. Frogner park was wonderful! So were the Maritime (Viking, Kontiki, Fram) Museums.
Too expensive. I would not go back.
Helsinki was the opposite. Expensive, but classy and savvy.

I didn't notice the crime or drug problem in Oslo, although I certainly noticed how expensive it was (especially the food). I enjoyed the museums there, especially the Viking ship museum and the Kon Tiki museum. I also loved seeing the Vigeland sculptures.

Spent a whole summer there and loved it!

Think it's probably fair to say that Oslo doesn't have a single truly world class museum, monument or famous piece of architecture - but that's not what the city's about.

Tree lined avenues full of grand houses that look like ambassadorial residences, green parks, open air swimming pools, rocky beaches and coves, pavement cafes everywhere, cycle routes and scenic walks. Oslo feels like a city for living, not tourism. And that's what I liked. Put simply, it's like coming home.
