Iparkedhere lookes interesting, but not being tech savy, does it require data usage in Europe?
|
29feb a shortcut to a website is fine when you are using a laptop, but apps are specially developed for ease of use and to be interactive on a smart phone or iPad/tablet.
The app version of Tripadvisor, for example, is much more convenient and easy to use than the website. |
Oops, just realized 29feb was on jan 31.

Iparkedhere needs data if you want it to guide you back to your vehicle from wherever you happen to be.
If you just want to use it to mark a spot (eg space 41, on level 4 Joe Blogs Car Park) then you don't need the data usage. Di |
efemerid - do you need to live in one of the areas listed at the top of the screen to be able to use this site? Di

Eat Rome is an awesome app. I haven't used it yet IN Rome but it is great for planning. As well as for boring meetings when I want to think about eating in Rome.

Tripit Pro is worth the extra cost, also TripAdvisor, Kayak, XE converter, and your bank's mobile app if they have one.
|
I call Plumeria Tattoo's recommendations...
Currency converter Google Translate TripAdvisor and add two more... iTreni (for Italian trains only) DB (Deutsch Bahn) Navigator (for trains in most of Europe) Both are great a looking up train schedules. They also keep track of the trains letting you know if they are late or on time. The Deutsch Bahn app even has a tracker that lets you know graphically where you are relative to the stops ahead as well as how long the stops are. By the way, the TripAdvisor restaurant finder...with recommendations...has never let us down. |
What makes tripit pro worth the money?

Eat Rome! Really great app by Elizabeth Minchilli (recommended by LowCountryIslander)!

Trip Advisor. Many people mention TripIt, but I couldn't get it to work for me. Maybe you need to use hotels instead of B&Bs?? It didn't save any of my B&B reservations so was rather useless for my Italy trip.
|
Leslieq it works well with booking services, like Expedia and booking.com, but you can also cut and paste your reservation info into Tripit. You can send yr completed itinerary to your outlook or iPad calendar, and it saves all the pertinent info in one easy step. I like it a lot.
|
Skyscanner - for searching the best flight options. It scans the major airline company booking systems and displays all the possible flight combinations.

Marking.

You can use Travel Stories Mobile to plan entire trip, calc budgert in multiple currencies and then track all trip activities. In the end the trip is presented as a story to show to your friends.

My essential travel apps include
* aMetro (has all the major metro maps) * Tripadvisor * a converter for currency, kilometres, temperature etc. * There are apps specific to destinations I will be. * a flashlight app comes in so handy * Kindle of course * various news apps to stay in touch, like Politico and Slate * A reading glass/magnifying glass app * A timer, very useful * A compass, believe it or not * Yelp can be very helpful for major cities. * Seekdroid. If my Samsung Note is stolen I can lock it, even erase it, from afar, using the SeekDroid app from another computer. |
Also (forgot):
* GoToMyPc, which allows you to access your home computer from you smartphone, via wi-fi. $10/month but incredibly useful at times. * Accuweather. I use this all the time. And these are not exactly apps, but they go on my smartphone: * easily accessed: a pdf of my itinerary, with all data for trains, planes, hotels, restaurants etc. I use this all the time! * in a folder: pdfs of all plane/train tickets * harder to get to: pdfs of my passport and driver's license * I create a custom phrasebook with Google Translate and print that to a pdf. Very handy. * A text file of a shopping list. I like to stay in apartments so this comes in handy. |
