My favourite place in Italy is Venice, especially wandering the streets after sundown.

How can anyone choose ONE favorite place in Italy? My favorite city is Rome. My favorite seaside locations are the Amalfi Coast, especially Positano and Ravello, Taormina and Portofino. I just got back in June and this thread makes me want to go again!

I have yet to go to the Amalfi coast, but I really can't say enough about the beauty of the Adriatic coast. We visited small charming beaches in Le Marche region, and it was really quite special. The small beach town of Sirolo tops the list for me of beach towns. It's a very charming, tiny town that bustles with European visitors in the summertime. The rock formations are little pieces of perfection on the shore. it's a beautiful area, made more so by the warmth of the town.

As I've said, though, I've yet to visit the Amalfi Coast, and I cannot wait to go! I will be in Italy in less than 3 weeks!

Italy is great all over. Tuscany for the region. Venice for walking around. Florence for the history. Bellagio for the beauty of the area. Rome is eternal.

Great short book to read before a trip to Florence is Bruneschi's Dome (sp). It is about the building of the dome in Florence and how it was accomplished. Really gives you a better appreciation for the entire project and how difficult it was.

Venice - if you love it, this needs no further explanation.
