What is your favorite city or area to eat?
Just wondering if anyone has any favorites and why? Doesn't have to be just for restaurants, it can be because you like the local markets, bakeries, etc.

Amazing. I was once asked what was my favorite food city by someone who expected my answer to be Paris or some other european city and much to their amazement I replied, "San Francisco." If you add in the Napa/Sonoma wine country it's even better.

It's Odd that you mention San Fran. My brother lives there. Paris would be my first choice, although I had to change my answer!!!! Our favorite restaurant is LULU on 4th and folsum. The mussels are awesome! The Bay area does have wonderful food.

New York at the San Generaro fest in Little Italy. God I would kill for a canoli right now. I never even saw any in the north of Italy. I was told by an Italian they are Sicilian.

My favorite city is Paris. There is delicious food everywhere you look - the street stands, boulanageries, patisseries, markets, cafes, bistros, restaurants! My favorite area (or country) to eat is Italy - no matter where we have been there is wonderful food.

For a region, I would have to mention Austria.
For a city, I am very satisfied with what my hometown of Hamburg, Germany, has to offer- basically cuisine from every corner of the world in formal and informal places, from dirt cheap to rather expensive plus a vast number of star- decorated restaurants with mostly lovely views and ambiance for those special occasions.

My comment may have to do more with economics than food but it's based on my personal experience.
In the 80's and 90's my friends and I would regularly meet in San Francisco and dine at the hot new restaurant: Postrio, Hawthorne Lane, Rubicon, Boulevard, 5th Floor, Aqua, LuLu's (sorry Rex), etc. As the tech bubble expanded the number of new restaurants increased as did the prices. The San Francisco dining experience became increasingly expensive and not the value it once was.
I understand that real estate, wages, city regulations, all contribute to the restaurant's overhead. Dining in San Francisco for me has just become too expensive and not a good value. The expensive restaurants are always expensive but not always worth it.
In Paris you can become part of the wonderful French dining choreography for a reasonable amount of money. Likewise in some areas in Rome. As Ira has pointed out he can vacation in Europe for less money than he can in New York. Unfortunately this economic reality has developed in San Francisco.

I am going to Switzerland (the Alps), Paris, and Amsterdam for our European trip next year. Of course, I am the most excited about trying the food in Paris. As for me, I don't know if I have really sampled enough food in one area to say it is my favorite. I had a wonderul eggplant pizza in San Fran many years ago. I lived in Houston for 3 1/2 years and had some of the best seafood dishes I can imagine. Now live in Austin and have had some great dishes here too. Definately going to experience the food culture in Paris next year. Just wanted the opinions of others.

I do like San Fran though I was uniformly disappointed with the Italian restaurants, everything else was great.
I'd have to vote for my home town though - London. I LOVE eating out here, the variety and quality just amaze me all the time.
