what is "to the top?"

I'm new to the site and somewhat addicted. I seem to have figured out most things, although I'd love to know who Elvira is (does she work for Fodor's, or just a frequent traveler with good advice). But what the heck is "to the top?"

A post on any thread makes it rise to the "top" of the list of threads on the left hand side.

Hi. I'm new too, but To the Top means that someone responds to a message just so that message jumps to the "top" of the pile. I think people do it so discussions keep going and so others who might have missed it the first time it was "at the top" have a chance to join in.
