What is the weather like in mid-March?
 

We are considering traveling to Italy in mid-March. How rainy/cold is it, and what are the crowds like, given that Easter falls in late April? We are hoping to travel without hotel reservations....is that ok to do this time of year?

We have been twice to Italy in mid-March. A great deal of your weather depends upon where you go, Mediterranean Italy, or the Italian Alps. We were in Venice,Florence, Rome, Milan and Naples on two occasions and the weather was half sunny and chilly and half cloudy and chilly. It is best to dress in layers, weather in no way held us back from doing anything, (other then laying out on beaches). It was very cold, windy and rainy several days in Florence. As far as reservations go, I would strongly encourage you to get hotel reservations for major tourist cities. This will help you if you are at all interested in mainting a budget and finding a decent location.. especially Venice, and Rome you can pay between $100.00-$500.00 per night but you better believe that the $100.00 per night rooms book up FAST sometimes months in advance. This year we are headed to the UK and France and I already have our city resevations (generally in rural areas your odds are better of finding a place in a decent location at a decent price on a moment's notice). Have a great trip. Oh also the crowds are wonderful, which is to say you can expect to be reasonably crowd free.

I think the location must be specified.<BR>There is a heck of a difference between Sicily and Meran, or even between Naples and Milan.<BR>As for forecasting the weather, particularly in March, not many official forecasters can do much that is accurate beyond 24 hours.<BR>
