What is the strangest (or worst)thing that's ever happened to you in a European hotel?

Stayed in a chalet-type hotel outside of Lucerne on a Cosmos tour. Although the room had a view of the lake, I was in the attic -- scratch muslin sheets, and it was so hot. Finally fell asleep after taking Excedrin PM. Woke up at 3am -- the building was shaking and here I thought I was in the middle of an earthquake. Nope -- farmers were banging trash can lids while shepherding their cows (cowbells and all) from the farm to the pasture land.

Needless to say, instead of being scared anymore and thinking it was my last night on earth, I was ticked off. When I returned to the USA, I told my Dad and he laughed at me, he said that it was a once in a life time experience and that I should have enjoyed the event.

By the way, the morning I checked out, I got stuck in the damned elevator in this place, and I'm claustrophobic.

I like to have my hotel room really cool and bundle up in bed. I'm used to cheap energy here in the states. After my second day at the Paris Hilton, my room's air conditioner was fixed by the hotel staff so I couldn't turn it down too far. It made me realize how we take things for granted.

Santa Chiara, I can't remember the name of the hotel in Firenze where the nightclerk showed me everything he had but it was in a little alley called Amorino. I don't speak Italian and when I reported the incident to the day clerk, I had to use hand motions.

Also not in a European hotel - this was in Montreal. Went there in the dead of winter with a friend. It was cold in our home town (Toronto) but nothing like Montreal - we were just freezing; it was absolutely bone-chilling. We checked into the hotel around 7:30 PM, and for some reason couldn't have dinner there; I don't remember if their kitchen was closed or they were just full. They recommended a nice restaurant a couple of blocks away. I thought "Oh my God, outside again, I don't think I can bear it!" but we were hungry, and it wasn't that far away, so off we went. We had a very good dinner and on the way back we were walking up the hill towards the hotel, and I noticed some water trickling down the hill on the road. I said "That's funny, it's so cold out you'd think it would have frozen by now. If it's still running, it must be coming from a fire hose." We looked at each other and thought "Oh, no." Got back to the hotel, and in fact - it wasn't on fire, but there was apparently a gas leak somewhere and they'd evacuated the entire place. Everyone was standing in the (now unheated) lobby and the doors and windows were all wide open. The fire department had connected their hoses to the hydrant which was what made the water run out on to the street. Eventually they checked everything out and there was no actual gas leak; it was a malfunction of the warning system. I was, in retrospect, really glad that they erred on the safe side but it took a few days until my bloodstream thawed out.

Not as exciting as it COULD have been, but the closest I ever came to being arrested in Venice, or anywhere else in the world. The people whose room I was trying to get into thought I was trying to BREAK in, and the hotel management was called. But since I had my key card they knew I really belonged somewhere in that hotel. It turned out to be the difference between Room 412 and Room 421, or something like that. Everyone was fairly nice about it. Talk about a "sobering" experience....
Hi

many years ago, I stayed at the Post House Hotel Edinburgh. The hotel grounds backed on to the Edinburgh Zoo.

In the middle of the night, the fire alarm sounded, and everyone stood by their room doors waiting for further instructions.

It was a false alarm, and everyone returned to their rooms.

Unfortunately no-one told the elephants................ they cried loudly until daybreak.

Peter
http://tlp.netfirms.com

Did Maragarita's story sum up the differences between the sexes or what? A woman says a man masturbating at the front desk was her worst hotel experience. However if it was a man, and the desk person was a woman, it might be posted here on a thread for best hotel experiences.

It was the dark of night, through a rainstorm, we were driving back from Spain throuigh the alps of French Basque. rocks hitting the car as we drove the unlit roads, when when we finally were out of harm's way, it was very late and forced to take any decent looking place. We happened upon an auberge. It seemed like a Norman Bates hotel. There was only one couple dining.
Fake stone peeling wallpaper in the dining room(a first!)The mother of the auberge straddled a chair in the middle of the room while asking the couple about themselves. The father cooked. The son with the nervous tic took are orders for dinner. The bedrooms were very tiny with squeeking floors, noisy plumbing, and fake peeling tile shower wall paper,,,no sleep that night, the bed was like a stack of coal zipped into a covering.
