What is the Nightwatchman's Tour in Rottenburg? What is Garmisch - Rottenburg Drive time?

What exactly is the Nightwatchman's Tour? We were in Rottenburg last year on a Globus Tour that stopped for tour/lunch. We will be in Garmisch in a few weeks and thinking about going back for a day trip. Is the Tour worth going back for?

Also, what is the drive time?

If you've only seen ROTHENBURG in the middle of the day, you'll be pleasantly surprised at Rothenburg in the evening after the crowds have left. The nightwatchman's tour takes you on a tour of some highlights, along with a good talk about what it was like there during the middle ages. Worth doing.

You're looking at a minimal drive time of 3 and 1/2 hours one way, probably closer to 4 hours. The distance, mostly by autobahn is about 180 miles or so. The length of the drive time suggests you must contemplate an overnight stay in Rothenburg. Well worthwhile in my opinion. Rothenburg is an entirely different and doubly charming town in the early morning and late afternoon before and after the onslaught of tourists.

John: You can read all about the Nightwatchman's Tour at www.nightwatchman.de (there will be an English version). The man that is in the pictures is the exact man who lead our tour this summer. It was an incredible walking tour that gave us so much of the rich history of Rothenburg. Even our 15-year-old enjoyed it immensely. The tour took about an hour and it started right at dusk. I'm not sure if you are planning a "day trip" that you will have enough time for it because it would begin at the end of the day.

I think the drive from Garmisch to Rothenburg is about 2-1/2 hours, autobahn the whole way.

Do yourself a favor and stay in Rothenburg that night at the Eisenhut Hotel. Right in the middle of things, old and charming, and as others say a totally different place when the tourists leave.Wonderful place to walk around at night.

When you get to Rothenburg, don't believe the brochures in hotels which state The Night Watchman's Tour begins at 9 pm. It definately starts at 8 pm from the town square in the middle of town. We missed out because we got there at 9 pm as they were returning.
