What is the best way from Nuremberg to Vienna?

We are taking a river cruise that disembarks in Nuremberg on May 25 in the AM. We are headed to Vienna for the evening. What is the fastest or easiest way to get from Nuremberg to Old Town Vienna (staying Steigenberger). It looks like almost 5 hours by train. Would hate to do it but would consider car rental if return was in Old Town?

Thanks for assistance!

Hi Philip, can't help on the train portion but I would not rent a car, picking up in Germany but returning to Vienna would add a large fee since pick-up and return are in different countries. I'm sure someone will give you great train info.

I have taken a river cruise from Vienna to Nuremberg and it was great, tho mine was during early December to visit the Christmas markets so it wasn't optimum weather for enjoying the scenery, May should be gorgeous. I hope you enjoy your trip.

You can fly - non stops daily with Air Berlin 1 1/4 hours for about 70 euro inclusive .
www.airberlin.com

Steigenberger as you must know already is in the city center .
You can take airport S Bahn train from the airport to WienMittee and transfer to UBahn U-3 to Herrengasse stop - 2 minute walk to hotel cost 3,60 euro.

reserved in advance taxi transfer about 32 euro from airport to hotel.

yes- fastest train about 5 hours.

Fstest train which also means

no delays going through security
no luggage WEIGHT restrictions
transport FROM city center TO city center
room to move around while traveling
the opportunity to actually see some scenery (although after that river cruise perhaps you'll be tired of it)

You may just want to re-consider the flight option

On such a short distance flying is not faster. Calculate the way to the airport, check-in and boarding, the flight itself, the way into the city. I doubt you'll need notably less than 4-5 hours. Besides, there is the aspect of pollution and environment.

Car? Save yourselves the hassle of driving, traffic rules, traffic jams, finding your way, and being crammed into that box for half a day. Driving is not faster than the train and less comfortable.

Agree - use the train - which I just checked - and there were no changes and four and a half hours trip time - so much more relaxing.
I recently flew Air Berlin from Salzburg to Berlin (but this would have been a much longer train trip) and the trip was fine - but if you get delayed then the trip is probably even longer and such a hassle.

We spent 5 nights at The Steigenberger in April and really loved our time in Vienna.
We had breakfast each morning at:

Go out the main doors and turn left and it is on the corner with a great view to the buildings nearby - at ground level!
You can also visit the Cafe Central with its famous interior by turning right out of the main door.

Some posting obviously do not know the airport connections in the above cities-they should not be so quick to reject a possible flight alternative.
Those familiar with the cities and airports know-
Both airports for discussed cities are relatively near to the city center and have quick frequent connections by publc transport. Nuremberg city center location - near train station to airport - 15 minutes by regular public transfers.
Vienna airport - city center - 16 minutes by CAT train -
airport train station on lower level of terminal.
Thus airport to convenient city center location in maximum 16 minutes .

Vienna City center station has 2 Ubahn lines on its lower level for quick access to most areas of the city. If one is staying at the Steigenberger for example - the U-3 UBahn line takes you to the Herrengasse stop - this 1 minute walk to the hotel- this is 3 stops and perhaps a 10 minute transfer time.
The train station is no better for transfers.
Both airports are compact and easily navigated- easily and quickly transited.

Vienna center ( Wien Mitte) even has a dedicated check- in service for many airlines-
you do normal check in obtain boarding card- check in luggage there too - they transfer directly to the plane- normally little or no waiting for this easy procedure.
Travelers proceed to the train with comfort.
at airport simply go directly to the boarding area -security check there goes quickly -
Schengen zone - no passport control.

Today many airlines offer web check in - quick easy and you just drop off luggage at the appropriate kiosk.
Air Berlin happens to offer this service.
Posters should not be too quick to reject flight option.
