What is the best OVERNIGHT STOPOVER BETW. LAKE COMO and SORRENTO?

Help! We're leaving in 3 days to Italy. 2 days in Stresa (Lake Maggiore), then driving to Sorrento & Positano. We'd like to stop overnight between the Lake Como Region and Sorrento - maybe Tuscany? Driving with my husband and 8-yr old. Any ideas on villages to stop at along the way, and most importantly, *which overnight village/good hotel (4 stars) would be a good half-way point (so the drive won't be too long to Sorrento). Please note, we'll be spending the LAST leg of our trip in Rome. Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

900ks with only one stopover. That is a long trip especially when you are travelling through the absolute GREAT areas of Italy. Siena is an obvious stopover, Cortona is another one as you will need to keep on the Autostradas, but why not factor in two with perhaps Lucca and Orvieto or San Gimignano and Orvieto or Lucca and Montepulciano or.... there are many, many options. Go to viamichelin.com for more.
You will only get a very small taste of Tuscany by keeping to the Autostrada.

Hi M,

I suggest an overnight in Orvieto.

The kid will enjoy the funicular ride up to town.

We just returned from France and Italy and the week we spent in Tuscany was near the Umbria border. We were just minutes from Montepulciano and enjoyed this town alot. Also liked Cortona. Siena or San G. are further north so depending on how far you want to drive the first day these would work too. Enjoy your trip. We were in Sorrento when Italy won the World Cup and it was sooo much fun!

I also would recommend Orvieto. Lovely town lots to see and do. Try and do St, Patrick's well, I think your eight year old would love it.
