What is the best Naples pizza?

We are arriving in Naples via cruise ship and plan to explore by foot. Any recommendations for the best pizza in Naples?

We ate at the Antica Pizzeria da Michele, 50 yds off Corso Umberto on Via Cesare Sersale, look for the vertical red Antica Pizzeria sign. It's a Rick STeves recommendation that was worth the search!

Hi
If you search google.com for "best pizza naples italy" you will get 6140 hits.

I'd guess that if you asked 1000 Neapolitans the question you would get 999 different answers.

A second vote for da Michele.

Just last week on the Food Network on the show "Follow That Food" the topic was pizza. It started in Naples and went around the world following pizza in all it's variety. According to the show the place for the real deal, is at Porto Alba Pizzaria.

Whatever you do stay away from Brandi's (touted as the first place to make pizza). The pizza was ordinary and the waiters were bored with the 'stupid american tourists' or so he said to his fellow waiter.

Pizza at Leon d'Oro in Piazza Dante was excellent (and cheap too, about 4 euros).

Actually, Brandi's claim to fame is this (they do not claim to have invented the pizza):

Pizzaria Brandi was first opened in 1780 under the ownership of Pietro Coliccio, who earned the nickname Pietro il pizzaiuolo (Peter the Pizza maker). Eventually, this little shop fell into the hands of Raffaele Esposito, husband to Maria Brandi. Esposito was asked to cater a banquet for the queen, Margherita di Savoia, for which he made three kinds of pizza for her to taste. Her favorite was the one made with tomato, basil, olive oil, and mozzarella - the colors of the newly united Italian Flag. The pizza was then named after her, and thus the Pizza Margherita was born.

In my opinion, the best pizza in Naples is "Ettore" in Via Santa Lucia.

If you do a search here, you should find two threads on this that date from a year or two ago that include a discussion of several good pizza places. We were in Naples in 2001 and went to Da Michele, but we gave up when we saw the long line. We went instead to Trianon, the other pizza place that you can see when standing in front of Da Michele. It was excellent, and I've heard that there are a few others that are quite good. It's worth checking beforehand, however, because we also found mediocre pizza at some of the places that we went to.
