What is the best Beer to drink when in Italy

Just about everyone who mentions drinks in Italy refer to wine.

So I would like to know what beer people recommend drinking when in Italy as my DH will need a few at the end of each day after i have finished dragging him around all the sites.

Peroni is good but I like Moretti, mainly because of the picture of the guy on the front of the bottle. That beer makes you feel just like him!

As self proclaimed beer travelers, my hubby and I still love Italy despite the fact that we have yet to find interesting beer. You are likely to find a very small beer selection at dining establishments, so your only choice might be big or small. There are, of course, a few exceptions, but Peroni and Moretti will be pretty standard...neither one of them is particularly memorable, but they do the trick when you need a beer.

On our last trip to Venice, we found that the best place to satisfy our urge for beer was either Devil's Forest Pub (small selection of Irish ales) and Moscacieka (where they had Leffe Blonde on tap).

I bookmarked this site for future reference on our next trip to Italy, whenever that may be. Maybe it will be helpful for you and your hubby:

I also had a beer during my last trip. Felt having one after drinking nothing but red wine and coffee for days.

I just asked for a beer, and they serve Moretti on tap. I had no expectation, but it's not a bad lager. Definitely drinkable.

Try Nastro Azzurro, Peroni's premium beer. It's a pretty good beer. Just try to forget that the name means "Blue Ribbon."

Well my Rome born and raised SIL loved the Peroni Beer in Italy. You can buy a Peroni here in N CA but it is not the same as he drank in Rome. Imagine what he liked was the Nastro Assurro RBrazill mentioned as my SIL commented the Peroni available here has the "wrong color" label and is not as good. I am not a beer drinker so I personally do not know.

We are beer drinkers and agree that Nastro Azzurro is about the best of the regularly available beers. Peroni is ok. Don't especially care for Moretti.

Whatever German, Austrian, Czech, Belgian, or Dutch import you can get.

Don't order the German barolo or the Italian beer.

Molly, I strongly recommend sampling Peroni's premium Gran Riserva Doppio Malto (Grand Reserve Double Malt). If your husband is planning to drive, though, remind him that at 6.6% it's not a wimpy beer.

So Neil, maybe that is what my Italian SIL likes! Hmmm, I will have to double check with him. Whatever Peroni Beer it was he sure misses it!

On my two trips to Italy last year, I discovered a "Birra Rossa" made by Moretti. This appears maltier than the standrd lager, and I very much enjoyed it.

The best beer in Italy is the one that's in front of me after a long day of touring.

You surely wouldn't drink local wine in England or local coffee in the US. Would you?

So stick with real Budweiser (from Ceske Budojevice), Staropramen or Lowenbrau. Beer you can be sure has been made fom malt, barley and nothing else.

LoveItaly, in San Francisco there is a tourist shop at the Cannery, they have a beer shelf with beers from all over the world. You may be able to find there whatever your SIL likes!

Good point, bardo. Belgium has some mighty fine brews--though I am a bit more inclined to favor Bavarian and Czech varieties. Isn't it lovely that Providence has blessed us with so many wonderful choices?

I hate beer. But if your husband loves it and has one (or more) ever single day, why not try different varieties every day until he finds a few that he likes, or just to sample the range of types available. That's what I'd do, if I liked beer, that is.
