Seeing as many Michelangelo's as possible. David is spectacular.

Eating gelato everyday.

Going away from tourist areas and just wandering.

Seeing as any mosiac floors as possible.
St. Marks in Venice is my favorite.

The only thing I regret about my trip to Italy?

That I couldn't stay longer!

Taking my Mom and doing everything she wanted to do enthusiastically. It was her dream trip and, while we didn't know it a the time, the last time we spent an extended amount of time together, just the two of us. The comfort I draw from those memories is priceless.

I don't regret the following:
-shopping
-window shopping every night
-taking tons of pictures (and finding out later they weren't enough)
-walking everywhere - the best way to see the cities
-gelato
-dinners in cafes along Piazza della Signoria
-indulging my mother
-sudden trips to a small town just because

I do regret a few things though:
-not going back enough
-not spending more time in Italy
-not taking advantage of flight deals to Italy

But I'm going to correct them

Buying lots of little things - for myself, for gifts, etc. It seemed like I bought a ton when I was there and not nearly enough when I got home!

Maureen B:

Monterosso al Mare. You won't forget how to spell it if you (loosely) translate it and imagine it:

monte: mountain

rosso: red

al mare: at the sea

If I started listing things I didn't regret doing in Italy, I'd be at the keyboard for hours. I can't choose just one. Off the top of my head: Ravenna, Napoli, Pompeii, the cinema museum in Torino, Camogli, Portico D'Ottavia (Roma), visiting the Pantheon in the rain, Museo San Marco (Firenze), Torcello (Venezia), the passegiata in Perugia plus a visit to its art museum, Hotel Negri in Cenova (Liguria), cocktails and sushi in Milano, touring the olive oil mill at Frantoio Brizi in Montefalco (Umbria), Sant'Angelo in Vado (Le Marche), staying at Nene in Urbino, the Eremo Gaudio in Lago di Como -- and driving through the fog like an idiot to see the Piano Grande in Umbria, and finally breaking through the clouds to the sun for one of the most spectacular natural sights in all of Europe.

But above all: Talking with Italians.

The one thing I don't regret doing while in Venic in July!
For a magical afternoon, fleeing the summer hordes of St. Marks Square and taking the Cipriani water taxi from the Hotel Daniell to the island of Torcello. Spending the morning wandering the tiny island leisurely and completely by ourselves, then having an appertif on the shaded terrace of the Osteria al Ponte del Diavolo and splurging for a wonderful lunch at the Locanda Cipriani. A day away, far away on the island of Torcello was the highlight of our summer Venice trip.

I agree with everyone else that absolutely everything we did on our trip was wonderful and only regret that there was not enough time and not enough room in the luggage to bring back more of the beautiful things I found there.

My personal highlights were:
ROME
1. Using Walter's (ParadiseLost) walking tours for the Forum and Julius Caesar assassination sites.
2. The Capitol Hill museum
3. The Borghese gallery
4. Pompeii daytrip

FLORENCE
1. David at the Academia in Florence
2. Accidental Tourist cooking class daytrip
3. The Duomo museum in Florence

And, of course, eating the best food and drinking the best wine on the face of the earth!

A whole month!!!!! How divine! You will absolutely fall in love with Italy!

Spending ten days on Capri..Anacapri actually. One of times we were travelling by car around Italy for two months. It was like a vacation within a vacation for my dear husband who did all the driving.

It was probably the most relaxing and fun ten days we have every spent any where.

Venice - no place like it. Notice the natural light. It is unique.
Eat gelato.
Florence - for art.
Eat - pasta is different in Italy.
Amalfi Coast & Positano area - beautiful views.
People watch - especially those Italian men. (smile)

What I do not regret?

You may be sorry you asked.

I enjoyed -- and many men (esp. those over 50) would confirm this, if they dared -- the total freedom to do what needed doing, where and when required, without recourse to any form of public facility (though with due regard to the sensitivities of others).

So there.

Dear Tedgale, too much information.

Dear Kimknight, I don't regret trying to learn some Italian over the years and being brave enough to use it, even when I knew I was in way over my head and probably looked a bit foolish.

I think I agree with you on that. I spent so much time and effort buying things for friends and family that I left myself out. I should have been shopping for little things for my home so that I can look around and remember. Next time..no one gets anything...only me (a little selfish? maybe..but I won't mind !!)

DH and I will never regret ditching our plans on the first sunny morning April in Tuscany one year, driving to La Spezia, taking the train to Vernazza, and hiking - on the spur of the moment - to Monterosso al Mare for lunch, with our ten-year-old, and getting back in time for a late (large) dinner.

I don't regret taking my 13-year old daughter into a deserted building in Florence by a member of the mafia to buy Gucci handbags. It was an incredible experience and we lived to tell the story but I can assure you I wasn't sure if we would survive. It turned out to be great and we bought lots of goodies. Although now, 20 years later, I would not recommend this particular shopping trip.

oh! Italy is so special, I loved every moment... but here were my highlights:

Gelato every day, sometimes for lunch and always after dinner.

3 (maybe 4) hour lunch at Caffe Positano on a perfect clear sunny day in Positano (the most beautiful view)... then napping for 2 hours.

Purchasing ceramics in Positano that I almost talked myself out of but now everytime I see my limoncello set in my hutch, it makes me smile and I remember how much my husband loved to have it after dinner while we were there.

WALKING all over Rome and popping into every little church we passed. Checking off all of my favorite Caravaggio works. I was in awe to see them in person. So amazing. AND Michaelangelo's Pieta in St. Peter's.. I can not put into words.

Doing the Context Rome tour of the Vatican & St. Peters. Superb, superb, superb.

Doing away with the 'itinerary' for a day or two and just going with the flow... see where it would lead.

A month in Italy (sigh). Salud!
