It usually means breakfast and one other meal (usually dinner) per day.

Half Board is 2 meals , usually breakfast and dinner, though sometimes you get your choice of lunch or dinner. You will normally have to order from a set menu, not a la carte

Barb, I've always understood "half board" to mean that you get a room (bed) and one meal (breakfast). Many small places only have the facilities to offer breakfast and nothing more.

I also understood "full board" as a place to stay and all of your meals. Be careful to note whether you reserve a double or a single room as well and if you'd prefer a private bath.

Lee, half board, as the others have said, is breakfast and one other meal, usually the evening meal. Also called half pension, demi-pension, halbpension, Modified American Plan and MAP.

Breakfast only is European Plan or Continental Plan, or EP or CP.

Three squares a day is full pension, American Plan or EP.

Be careful when looking at the pricing. A room with breakfast is usually quoted as one price for two people if sharing a double room, unless they list breakfast separately. When requesting half board, the price quoted is usually a per person charge. Just read carefully and be sure you know how the pricing works.

I just stayed at a small (11 room) hotel in the Black Forest and had one dinner not half board, just off the standard menu, and two dinners with half board. The dinner from the full menu was more elaborate and I had more to choose from. The half board options were more than adequate and inexpensive enough that we were all satisfied.

Ed, Thanks for the assist on that definition. I haven't used that option that I recall and having lived in Germany, didn't have the need, either.

BTW, your "Traveling with Ed & Julie" website is great, particularly on Rome!

Half board is fairly common in many smaller inns and chateux in France outside the big cities. It always means room + breakfast + one other meal (lunch or dinner, I think most of the time you can choose). IN your example, that would appear to be 770F for room only but 900F for the room plus halfboard for two people, meaning meals are only 130F total or 65F per person. That is very very cheap, I've never seen half board that cheap. ... I just looked at that web site and under rates it clearly defines what halfboard means, but I can see no pricing like you mentioned, it's a lot more expensive for the meals (although not unreasonable). The list I saw gave cheapest room at half board costing 1340F for two people; 760F was for the room, leaving 580F total for two people's meals. That is more like what I'd expect. Anyway, it says you can't do that without minimum 2 day stay, as I recall, better check that out.
