What is best language course to learn some German?

We're travelling to Germany in July. We are staying with a German family and I would like to learn at least a little German to help with our communication with them. Does anyone know if the Rosetta Stone series is a good language course or are there better ones out there?

I've heard nothing but good things about Rosetta Stone. Another good thing is to check your local library - they often have CDs and books you can check out that will work as well.

Hi,
I recently used what I found to be a very good German language CD set called "Learn in Your Car" series from Penton Overseas, Inc. I bought it at Barnes and Noble.

See if you like the Pimsleur approach. Their intro 4-CD set is about $15 at Amazon.

Here's a 2nd for Robes suggestion. The Pimsleur set is pretty good for learning "traveler's German". The 10 CD set should get you through most settings.

Remember, when you ask for directions, the likelyhood you'll understand anything but a few words is low, but keep asking. So many German (and probably all European) young people have an impressive ability with English, you shouldn't have too many problems.

The Rosetta Stone system is excellent. I am currently using it to learn Greek and am extremely pleased with it. It makes learning easy and fun and teaches you quite a lot of grammar easily. I'm not getting any housework done - just seem to be on the computer all the time learning Greek!
