What is a side view of the Gran Canal?
 

Al ponte Antico confirm my reservation for a superior room with side view of the Gran Canal

What does that means?

You will not be facing the canal.

If you stick your head out the window and lean out, you will be able to see the canal.

I would assume that if I look straight out my window I wouldn't see the Grand Canal....but if I went to the window and looked either to the right or left, I'd see the Grand Canal.

I'm sorry...I really thought that you weren't sure about the view.

The owners of the hotel own two properties...both are lovely. My dear friend developed Locanda Orseolo...it was then sold to the present owners. It is a lovely hotel with a wonderful staff.

ps Locanda Orseolo is the sister property to Hotel Al Ponte Antico.

Bailey, you think I should try Locanda orseolo instead of Al ponte Antico?

Locanda Orseolo is not on the Grand Canal...it is tucked inside a little courtyard in the San Marco sesitere. I think the prices a little less than Al Ponte Antico.
But, if you can get a room with a view of the Grand Canal at Al Ponte Antico, even if it's a view from the side.....I'd probably stay there. I have to confess I am partial to views!!

I just returned from a stay at Al Ponte Antico. It was a dream stay and I had no view at all!
Matteo is wonderful - breakfast is served on the porch overlooking the Rialto - and you can stop for a glass of wine and just sit and enjoy the view at any time of the day. The location is great - a short walk to the vaproetto stop and a 10 minute walk to San Marco.
I tried for a reservation at Locanda Orseolo but they were full - I am not sorry to have stayed at APA. The staff is absolutely great!
They have a water taxi landing if you want to come in from the airport that way.

If I had booked and paid for a more expensive room that had a canal view, I would have been quite upset with myself since I wasn't in my room more than 15 minutes at a time other than showering and sleeping.

I see that Ponte Antico has placed their suites on the canal side, which logically ups the incentive to pay more for the little sitting area. But truly, your side view will likely be nice, and you will have many many views all day long in Venice (beginning with that breakfast on the terrace ...?)

Any view less than K Hepburn's in Summertime will always seem secondary! And her's is unique - not to be seen from the location of her pensione! (The wonder of movies ...)

BT, judging from the pics of the hotel and its position on the map, you may not have to stick your head out the window, just be seated at an angle from it, or go up to it and look to the side ... best of luck and have a fantastic time.
