What is a good rate for train tickets Amsterdam to Paris and Paris to Koln

Trying to decide about buying train tickets for our fall trip. We just need tickets from Amsterdam to Paris, with a stop at the Hague, then tickets from Paris to Koln.

I want to get the best deal and also want to know if it would be reasonable to buy the tickets when we get there. For example, would we save money by purchasing our tickets to Paris when we arrive in Amsterdam? (We will be there five days before leaving for Paris.)

I've read on this board that we would pay 50 percent more by purchasing ahead of time.

I do not think that the price of a train ticket in Europe changes depending on where you buy them. There may be "specials" deals on certain times of the year or family rates etc that you only really get locally but I doubt this would pertain to you. I think you are talking about saving money by not having to pay handling fees for the train tickets purchased abroad.
I do not know if this is still the common practice as I always buy my train tickets when I get to Europe.

Hi J,

>I've read on this board that we would pay 50 percent more by purchasing ahead of time.<

I think that you might have misremembered. You can often save by buying ahead.

For Amsterdam/Paris via Den Hague, you can buy your tickets in Amsterdam - AMS to Hague and Hague to Paris.

The second leg is on the THALYS and you won't get a discount buying ahead - 87.5E.

For Paris/Koln (THALYS), you can save 4E (and print your own ticket) by buying online at www.voyages-sncf.com - 81.5E, but this ticket is not refundable.

I think that you can buy your P/C ticket when you get your AMS/Paris tickets.

Have a nice visit.

Thanks for your replies.

Ira, are you saying I can save by buying before I leave for Europe, or buying a few days ahead of time once I get there?

Hi J,

Since your expensive tickets are on THALYS, the prices will be the same whenever you buy them.

The only reason for buying in advance would be because you absolutely had to take a particular train and you would be traveling in high season on a weekend.

We will be there in early October, which I assume is not peak season.

Hi J,

I would buy the tickets in Amsterdam, when convenient.

Have a nice visit.
