What is a DH?

Recently on these forums I have seen the acronym “DH” used in reference to (normally male) husband/boyfriend/whatever. Can anyone kindly illuminate me to the meaning? I have thought perhaps “designated husband” to refer to the one you travel with, or possibly could it be “dear heart” gosh how soppy. Maybe “divine halo” if you have been married a long time, surely not “dog house” How about “dirty hippie” “Dumpty Humpty ” or “Demm Hawg”, maybe? Does anyone have a direct hypothesis?

dear husband

dw--dear wife
ds--dear son

etc

sappy, yes but makes for less typing :)

sfowler Jul 15th, 2006 04:39 AM

I always thought it was "darling husband". Oh well ;)

OneWanderingJew Jul 15th, 2006 04:49 AM

maybe it stands for that as well...on a good day...otherwise it's dang/darn/damn husband :D

Syl Jul 15th, 2006 05:10 AM

And I thought it was a "designated hitter".

Viajero2 Jul 15th, 2006 05:25 AM

In my case I use it as "Deaf Hubby" :-D

ekscrunchy Jul 15th, 2006 05:27 AM

All I can add here is that this abbreviation makes me cringe each time I read it. It's so.....it's so....I don't know what it is but I don't like it. One bit! Even worse is LW for "lady wife!!!"

Viajero2 Jul 15th, 2006 05:31 AM

eks--chill B-)

ceb7369 Jul 15th, 2006 05:34 AM

Eks - I would expect more cringing if LW stood for "little woman" unless said in kitschy terms.

Not that it would bother me either way.

ekscrunchy Jul 15th, 2006 05:37 AM

Ok. I will let it go..and I will admit that I cracked a smile when I read "deaf husband!!!"

kwren Jul 15th, 2006 05:38 AM

Eks - are you putting down my dear Dumpty Humpty?

ekscrunchy Jul 15th, 2006 05:40 AM

Is he deaf?

ekscrunchy Jul 15th, 2006 05:41 AM

Never mind..I realize I may be offensive with that last comment.....no, your humpty is just fine!

Pausanias Jul 15th, 2006 05:43 AM

I don't by the abbreviation argument. Why not a simple H or W? Or initial.

The D thing, and the excessive use of words ending in Y can make the site retchingly saccharine at times.

amaclise Jul 15th, 2006 06:29 AM

I thought it was Lovely Wife, that sounds much better.

JAGIRL Jul 15th, 2006 06:57 AM

I believe it's Lovely/Loony wife and Dear/Damn Husband...

susanteach Jul 15th, 2006 07:24 AM

TeeHee! DH was annoying at first, but now I use it too. If we're lost or having a travel-related fight, I call mine AH.

Sampaguita Jul 15th, 2006 07:37 AM

Of course, Dear Husband, I would have never of thought of it since my wife (lucky us guys, that's easy to type) never calls me that. But something cold about the use of an acronym, sort of reminds me of the people classified ads in Sunday papers, took me years to figure our GSOH, thought it was a request for something kinky! Why not use his name, or a shorter form, Fred, Jake, Sam etc. (BTW my wife being Italian calls me "amore")

SeaUrchin Jul 15th, 2006 07:43 AM

Sampaquita, love the amore! So that would be MA?

ekscrunchy Jul 15th, 2006 07:50 AM

Yes, the actual name, or else "my husband, my spouse, my partner, my slave, etc," would be far superior to these "retchingly saccharine" abbreviations! Lady wife, indeed....what other kind could there be anyway?
