What happened to the great fares??

Last week I noticed that Delta had great fares from NYC to Rome for about $430. Started to make plans for mid-April and checked back today and the fare is $677! I guess I missed that opportunity but still need to make plans...any other great fares out there or should I wait until we get a bit closer to the departure date. That seems risky....Thanks for your ideas.

Those Delta fares were gone in about 6 hours.

Hi bobbie,

Under $700 is a good fare.

The probability of saving $100 is lower than the price going up $100 in the next six weeks.

You should have been looking in early Feb. Go-today had some good packages for air-hotel. When I hesitated on my reservations in Feb they went up about $100 for the same dates over a weeks time. I dont think 677 is very good either, especially for NYC.

Ugh $430 is so much easier to swallow than $700 but thanks Ira, will move on :)

I'm having the same trouble finding a good fare from Oregon to Athens in May. Everything is SO MUCH more expensive this year. I may have to cancel my plans! :-(

If you mean "great" as in what they cost a year ago unless you get a periodic sale bargain they are GONE along with last year. A few weeks ago I was looking for a flight from Dulles to Amsterdam w/return from Frankfurt. At the TIMES and on the DATES that I wanted to go the fare was about $1200; yesterday I looked for the same itinerary and it had dropped to $830. In April I'm flying to Switzerland for $419 (but i booked that LAST August)..get the picture??? there is no rhyme or reason, it is all based on supply/demand and route competition...ACCURATE predictions about prices are impossible and the people who post here and tell you they KNOW when the sales will be and when the prices will be this or that are also reading palms along I-95!

To give some perspective to air fares, in May, 1983, round-trip from Austin, Texas, to London (Delta) was $800. Small consolation but in relative dollars, we are still getting a good deal. I suspect that the real low fares this summer will be hard to come by due to increased travel to and from Europe. I hope I'm wrong!
