Naples, Florida was presumably named after Naples, Italy, so I think the Italian references are relevant.
The idea that "Neopolitan" is standard for a resident of Naples, Florida is dubious. If you google "Neopolitans Florida" (without the quotation marks) - using the plural form to avoid instances of the adjective - you get 254 hits; "Neapolitans Florida" (again without the quotation marks) gets 19,000 hits. |
Oh, just one more comment:
I also did a general dictionary search on line via OneLook.com, which is a multi online dictionary lookup system. Neopolitan is shown in six listings. Five of those clearly say "Neopolitan --noun -- a resident of Naples". The sixth is an encyclopedia listing which only mentions a record album with a "mispelling of Neopolitan for Neapolitan ice cream". I am not a flavor of ice cream. I realize that you won't like any of those five dictionaries. Too bad. I do. |
Can someone say, "who cares?"
|
Your explanation of why you spell your name that way was based on a mistaken notion that the word for a person from Naples and the word for in the style of Naples are somehow spelled differently. When I asked the question I had no idea that that would be your explanation. The discussion became prolonged because you've kept trying to justify your spelling variation as correct, or as more acceptable or as acceptable as the normal spelling, and that was just silly, as I know and jahoulih knows. It's not important and not interesting. You just spelled it wrong--that's all.

Who Cares? this is being over-kill!!! :)
|
Yes, I spell it wrong on purpose. Are you happy now? I'll let you win. I was just saying all that other stuff for fun. OK? Whenever you see my name in the future you can smile with delight knowing I deliberately spelled it wrong. Won't that delight you, knowing that you were right all along and I was wrong. Just joking you.
Hoever, would you please contact the seven online dictionaries I've found that also all spell it wrong? I'm sure they will be just as eternally grateful as I am to be corrected. I would contact them myself to let them know, but this is obviously more important to you than it is to me, so I elect you to be the one to correct them. To make it easier for you to contact them, here is the list: Lookwayup. WordNet Dictionary.com Ultralingua.com Rymezone OneLook.com FreeDictionary.com |
Will try to remember not to use those dictionaries.

Mamma mia!
Neopolitan is just someone's a screen name. To lighten up a little, I don't know think screen names necessary need to be subjected to strict spelling rules, and I am having a chuckle at the moment thinking of some of the crazy spellings of English words cimmonly found on the streets of Napoli herself, where counterfeit Rollex watches are bought and sold- they are excellent knock-offs, carefully inscribed in tiny letters on the face... "R O L L E K S". .....:) |
Oops, I just misspelled Rolex!

Just to be safe, here's another source of INVALID information that everyone should avoid:
Webster's On Line Dicitonary. http://tinyurl.com/pkdek But if someone does contact this growing list (so far 8) of online dictionaries to let them know they are all totally wrong and asking them to stop giving wrong spellings, please do realize that they all made the same single mistake. They have only misspelled the word as "Neopolitan" when giving a noun usage meaning a resident or person from Naples. All of them spelled it "Neapolitan" when defining it as an adjective meaning in the style of Naples. But of course, now we know (since we've been told by experts rather than merely looking in a dictionary) that they are still wrong. We now all know there is no such difference. So now that we have an expert in our midst who is a far better source than such things as online dictionaries (even if they are backed by Websters -- what a joke -- those people who don't know how to spell), we can all be thankful that we have the correct information. They are all wrong and she is of course right. >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>> Incidentally, I think there is a big difference between some one "not letting go" in trying to explain and defend himself, and someone "not letting go" in trying to discredit someone else. Not that that statement has anything to do with this topic of course, since I've already admitted that I am wrong -- along with all the dictionaries. It was just a thought I wanted to pass along. |
I wonder if a certain someone's dictionary has the words "pedant" or "prig" in them...
Neo, go on spelling your screen name however you wish. As a fellow Floridian, I can tell you that "Neopolitan" evokes a sense of Naples, Florida in a way that "Neapolitan" does not. |
And of course I mean "in it." I don't need to have my grammar corrected on this thread!

Noah Webster has been dead for a long time, and any dictionary that cares to can call itself "Webster's." "Webster's On Line Dictionary" is definitely not the same thing as Merriam-Webster's, (www.m-w.com), which actually publishes a print dictionary, and which does not list "Neopolitan" in its online version. It's not clear whether any of the online dictionaries cited by Neopolitan makes any attempt to distinguish between correct spellings and common misspellings; also, several of them (including "Webster's") are merely copies of the same database (WordNet), and so cannot be counted as independent confirmation of each other.

Villa Vignamaggio makes wine, which may elevate it to exalted Fattoria status. It's also a great place to stay near Greve.
