What Euro newspapers do you read?

What European newspapers do you read on-line [in English]? In particular I am looking for a French paper. Thanks

I'm not sure I understand the question, weber. French newspapers (Le Monde, Le Figaro, La République, etc.) are in French. The closest thing I can think of is the International Herald Tribune, but it's not a French newspaper.

yeah, I read parts of Le Monde, Liberation, and Figaro online -- all occasionally, not every day. I get the French news from Agence France Presse daily on economy, culture and society through a personalized Yahoo mail account. All of these are in French.

I don't think French newspapers can afford to translate each day's paper into English. If there is one, I've never heard of it. Even the online news I get delivered from Agence France Presse is in French. I do read Parisvoice occasionally, which is a Paris magazine for expats in English, but it's only monthly. I don't know of any French newspaper similar to the Prague Post (a Czech newspaper in English).

El Pais and The London Times. I'd love to read Le Monde 'cause I love their politics but no parlez-vous frances.

I love to read La Derniere Heure, a Brussels daily. Not much of it's online, though. Too bad, the paper is a hoot. It's a Belgian tabloid (not like News of the World or the National Enquirer, fortunately) that focuses heavily on criminal shenanigans and political scandals in Belgium (also a lot of sports, but I skip that). Unbelievable how much truly weird stuff goes on in such a small country!

I read the travel sections of the Guardian, London Times and the Telegraph on Sundays. I try to read El Pais (subscription) and El Mundo (free) everyday. On Thursdays I read the Gastronomy section of the Basque Country's El Correo (www.elcorreodigital.com) for Rafael Garcia Santos' weekly restaurant reviews (countrywide, not just the Basque Country).

There's no English-language French newspaper (that isn't specifically for tourists and covering mainly culture). Agence France-Presse is a news agency that is French, sort of the equivalent of AP. The Int'l Herald Tribune is an English-language newspaper distributed all over Europe, and it's affiliated with the New York Times. It's not specifically for France-related news, but I believe that depending one what city you buy it in it may have a special section covering local news.

Are you just asking out of curiosity or do you have a goal in mind? It would help to know that. My favorites are Le Monde, the Guardian, Nouvel Observateur, the Independent, but that's because I'm a big lefty! If you're more conservative read Le Figaro (also in French).

Although I haven't followed it in a few years, (I don't have a high school daughter in Spanish any more - - I used to "clip" articles there for her), I thought that El Pais is/was a great newspaper for most world news and especially (oddly enough) the entertainment business - - which seems to be very big in Spain, on a global scale.

As others have indicated, the reading is in Spanish only.

Best wishes,

Rex

In terms of online French newspapers -- in English -- it is possible to access Le Monde in a machine-translated version. I don't know if that would be what you're looking for, but I have found it to be useful for comparison purposes. If I think I know what is being said in French, then I can look at the translated version to check myself out. Of course, this isn't foolproof, because machine translations can get pretty silly!

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I do read aseveral Brit papers and FAZ [Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung] but other than the Agence France Presse, have not been able to locate a French paper in English. My objective is simply to find ways to get a feel for European thinking on day to day issues. The Tocqueville Connection is one I hadn't located and I thank you for the suggestion.

Weber, you might be interested in the Guardian's 'The Wrap' summary of what other UK newspapers are saying about current issues and topics:
