What does "indifferent" mean when choosing seat selections?

Hi:

Presently I am on the voyages sncf site. I am booking prems, single way tickets, from Caen to Paris for May.

I have entered:
one way;
1 adult, 1 senior;
2Class, Non-Fumeur;
Pickup tickets: France

Cost is 34 Euros.

Our seat placement choices are:
salle (hall, big room)
compartiment (sleeper compartment)
indifferent ?

We don't need a sleeper, I think salle may mean you sit in an open compartment,

If I select indifferent what type of seats will my husband and I receive?

Hi, un compartiment is not a sleeper compartment, just a room for a few persons (sorry don't know the name in English).
Indifférent means you don't care so you let the system choose for you. :-)

The 'salle' is a long open car, with seating kind of like that of an airplane; sometimes half the car faces the other half.
The 'compartment' is like the old train scenes in the movies, where 4-6 people can sit, and there's a sliding door to enclose your group.

i suppose you'll be taking un train "corail" or TER, because I don't think there are any compartments in TGV....

It basically means that you and your husband will be seated in different parts of the train.

[Sorry.]

good explanation, robespierre :-)

Thanks guys, we'll opt for the "salle".

If it isn't on a TGV and perhaps even if it is if there are non-reserved seats anywhere within your class of service you can easily move to those.

There are no TGVs between Caen and Paris.
