What do you think about Germany?

Hello everyone!
I think this forum is great- that is why I want to post a question which seems to be qiete a long time on my mind... My ancestors came from Germany and I often wonder what people think about this country now. I habe never been there, but I would like to visit some places I read about. I read a lot of books and guides- about political system, people, economy, culture, sights. THe problem is that books are not as lively as someones opinion.. So please: Write your comments...
Thanks, linda

I am from Bahrain and booked to go to Germany from 2 to 30 August with my wife and two children 11 & 9 years old. Planning to tour by car most of time. Over 12 years ago I have been to Germany and Austria and enjoyed both. I like the scenery, people... especialy pretty girls , good beer & good family accommodation. My children will also like German suasages/hot dogs. My travel by KLM to Hamburg (still not quite sure or to change) and will depart from Munich. All through Amesterdam airport. I have ordered a couple of travel books from Amazon UK to help my plan. Normaly I travel at least two times a year.

I love Germany. Munich makes a great base!

Maybe my grandchildren won't feel this way but in light of 20th century history I think Germany stinks (excuse my bluntness) and wouldn't consider travelling there. Forgive...never forget....

The comment above is what makes the world such a dangerous place as old grudges never die.

I was stationed in Germany in the 70s and fell in love with the country and the people. They are great. We still get back there frequently and it is still great.

Forget what happened 60 years ago. Go see the country and the people.

Truth, then you would not want to go to Austria since a high percentage of top nazi's were Austrian, you would not want to go to France due to heir persecution (and murder) of Jews, you would not want to be in America due to the persecution Jews and murder of American Indians and blacks. Where in the world is left for you to go.

Germany is a country full of racists, full of prejudices. Its ugly, dirty , grotty and grimy...
Due to their economical situation at the moment they will loose more and more of their power and hopefully will end up to what they have done to many people....

Germany is great!

It's like every other country. Nice people, mean people. As a complete culture they have their strengths and their weaknesses. They are aggressive, but helpful. As far as travel, France, Italy, the UK, Spain all have more to offer the tourist. However, because it is a large country with some variety, they do beat out Switzerland, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, and Scandanavia for sights. Southern Germans drink more wine than the Northeners.

I've visited Germany 2x now and loved it both times. The Rhine region and the Romantic Road are wunderbar! I'm sure parts are gritty, but what developed country doesn't have its less desireable areas?

I visited germany the first time for work. It had never been too high on my list of places to see and i don't know why. It's a beautiful country w/ a lot to do outdoors. The people that i met through work were all very welcoming and willing to help me learn the ropes. Besides the more recent history, there are a lot of old Roman ruins also. Germany contains a wealth of art in it's architecture. It's also fascinating how they've managed to rebuild so many of their cities in the spirit of what was there before. My top places to visit are Berlin, Cologne, Munich and other parts of Bavaria, and the Rhine valley. Hope you get to go soon.

My husband and i got relocated to the mannheim, germany area 14 months ago. I agree with Matt's post from yesterday - good people, bad people, nice places, not so nice places can all be found in germany. There are some great customs here (wine fests, christmas markets) and some pretty silly rules (no shopping on sunday, no washing your car at home. We have had some pretty bad days, but overall this has been a great experience in a great country.
Anyone that refuses to visit Germany because of the events surrounding the Holocaust and WWII, should not visit Europe at all. Anti-Semitism was widespread throughout Europe during the mid-20th century. Jews were deported to concentration camps from virtually every occupied country, and always with the help of indigenous citizens. It wasn't Germany Nazis that deported Anne Frank, it was Dutch Nazis. If anything, the Germans have made a tremendous effort to deal with their past, as opposed to other European countries that continue to deny their complicity in the Holocaust.
