What do YOU recommend? SE Bavaria to Wurtzburg by way of Switzerland -- Would appreciate transportation, route & lodging suggestions.
We have 3 days to get from SE Bavaria to vicinity of Frankfurt. We'd like to see the sights along the way plus make a sidetrip into Switzerland. Would this be feasible in 3 days? Any suggestions for a route? Could we do it by train or should we rent a car? THANKS!

Trains go virtually everywhere. If there are 5 or fewer of you, you can travel for 3 days throughout Bavaria and beyond Würzburg on 1-day passes for a grand total of 120 DM or less. The only hitch is that you use the short-distance trains and travel off-peak if travelling on a weekday. Once you have some routes roughly planned, e-mail me and I'll fill you in on how to do it -- or, if you speak German, check out the "Länder Tickets" at the www.bahn.de site.

I would suggest you rent a car and stay in the area, saving Switzerland for another trip. There is SO much to see between Bavaria and Frankfurt and it is all so beautiful and restful. You can just wander around and soak it up, especially when you can drive where you want. Try Wuerzburg, the Neckar River valley (Schwabish Hall and Bad Wimpfen) and everyone loves Rottenburg. Bamberg os great. too.

Hey, thanks for the insights & suggestions! Train sounds cheaper & maybe more relaxing (tho less flexible) than the hassle of renting a car. If we opt for train travel -- what do we do w/luggage while sightseeing? Depending upon answers to the luggage delimma, we're leaning toward the train. Russ, appreciate your offer! Stay tuned, we're strategizing on possible routes.

It's personal preference, I suppose, but for me the stresses of driving, parking, and navigating in unfamiliar territory, even with a good command of the language, detract from the experience (I've rented several times in Germany for a week at a time.) I love just hopping on a train, looking out the window, enjoying the company of my fellow travelers, and ending up in the middle of the town I want to visit.

Luggage: You can arrange to check into your room upon arrival (the more central to the downtown station, the better, usually) or take advantage of the lockers that occupy most stations in Germany.
