What do you do with your passport when you are at the beach swimming?

I have traveled to several different European countries, and I have never had anything taken from a hotel, B&B, etc. Leaving your passport locked up at your hotel seems the safest andmost convenient way to deal with the passport issue if you are going to the beach.

Okay, now I'll most likely just leave it at the hotel in the safe.
But, how do you know it's really okay no to carry your passport at all times?
I guess I just assumed it was something you had to do.

Well, you could check the laws of the country(ies) you're planning to visit.
OR, you could simply make a copy of the first page of your passport and keep that with you at all times, which should suffice if you should have an encounter with the authorities for some reason.
