I forgot to mention that I usually bring a good book to read. On my last trip I was going to bring The Tropic of Cancer, but I seem to have misplaced it.... I also usually order a special meal--I'm partial to the Vegetable Lasagna.

The day of my flight I always have the same routine.
1) Get up in the morning and take a nice long soak in the tub as opposed to a quick shower.
2) Go to my local day spa and get "the works"- facial, massage, manicure, pedicure and aromatherapy.
3) Go home and change into my "plane" outfit which is a comfortable top and pants made from a velour-type of material.
4) On the plane I get comfy and hope for relaxing flight!

Carrying a small bottle of water suffices. The flight attendants (at least in my experience) are always happy to pour you a refill from their water bottles whenever you ask.

I've seen all the standards: water, comfy socks, water, little face spritzers, water, chg. your sleeping habits, water, and JetLag pills (A+), water, melatonin (take for 2-3 days before you leave to get your body used to it)...did I mention water? Dehydration is a killer in travel. I also take along about a week or two supply of those flavored vit. C fizzypackets: Emerge n' cee. Adds vitamins, anti-oxidents to those first few and last few days of travel when you're at your most vulnerable. A new item is also Airborne, another fizzy tablet providing germ control for the plane (or schools, or whatever).
Books, journal and my Italian mini dictionary and amen to earplugs-not just for the airplane--may come in really handy when you find your room is next to the belltower...that chimes the quarter hour all night long!

comfortable shoes that can be gotten on and off easy. Shorts that go on during the flight, nice clean socks, toothbrush. Lots of water, change my watch to the destination time right away.

I usually eat two large refried bean burritos with extra jalepeno peppers at the mexican restaurant at DFW. I also stuff tissue in my nose to prevent nose bleeds during take off and landing.

Big bowl of cabbage, two hard boiled eggs and two beers. Most of the time by the middle of the flight I have the whole row to myself!

I usually work like a dog (my office is busy) the 48-72 hours prior so that all I am able to do is pass out on the flight. That backfired once. I flew from Hawaii to the West Coast (only 5 hours) and had an hour and a half before my connecting flight. I was so tired, I fell asleep in the airport and nearly missed my plane! The desk clerk saw me and shook me awake....I was the last one on board. yeesh.

Oh, I also try to be well moisturized...before leaving the house I put on extra moisturizing lip balm and eye cream.

I bring a travel pillow from The Company Store; lumbar cushion, eye-mask, earplugs, Ambien, etc as others have noted.

Moisturizing EYE DROPS feel great and are as important to me as skin lotion.

Take off your shoes, & use them as a foot rest; a purse can serve this purpose as well.

Totally disagree about the overhydrating idea. I used to do this, & needed 10+ trips to the bathroom to get rid of all that water!

And this time I am going to skip dinner & try to sleep right away; who needs dinner at 9:30pm anyway??
