Patrick, where was that take-away fish & chips place at only 1 pound? It's one of the first things I want to experience in London. Thanks in advance!

Pubs were the best bet in London for us. For a nice, sit-down dinner with some linen involved was easy to spend $40-$50 per person. I agree that is comparable to Chicago, which is expensive too. Paris is much more economical because even fairly modest restaurants often have excellent food. That's not always the case in London -- in fact, it often isn't.

Diverging from the main subject I know, but after years of living in Paris, I have the impression that Paris restaurants are often over-rated. Yes you can get some superb meals but you have to pay top prices. More modestly priced food is generally very disappointing and often dire.

I have just returned from lunch out in Winchester. Two courses were £8.95, three would have been £11.95. I had celeriac broth and brown bread followed by seared salmon with pureed potatoes and a creamy lemon sauce. My husband had a terrine and salad followed by sausages and mash with onion gravy. It was a good quality meal. I hope this gives you some idea.

PS I would say that compares reasonably well with a meal of similar quality in France.
