I went there on a day trip. I liked the San Stefano complex of churches and the lunch I had at Da Cesari. The rest of Bologna that I saw - and I did spend the whole day walking around - left me totally cold and happy to leave in the evening.
Mine will probably be a dissenting vote...

I spent two days there on my last trip and would return.
Loved the architecture, the food, and the walkable size, as well as the "university town" atmosphere. (Boys break dancing on the steps of the Duomo made for a unique photo op!)
I am also a big fan of Lucca.

We stayed 3 nights in Bologna in Dec 2004 and loved it. It's a bustling University town with good reasonably priced restaurants, great Churches, art galleries and interesting shops. We took a side trip by train to Parma for the day which we'd also recommend.

It's one of Italy's unheralded gems. Just walking around is a wonderful experience. But, there's a lot more than than to Bologna...a marvelous Etruscan museum...sumptuous food...excellent shopping (prices much better than in Rome, Florence or Venice)...etc., etc., etc.
