I found the northern Italians to be extremely friendly. Every where we went they were kind, funny and welcoming.
In my travels in France, I have to say most people were friendly but the Parisians were noticably reserved. One taxi driver tried to charge us more than he should have, my daughter mentioned it to him in fluent French and he became very hostile towards her.
I personally like the English the best. They are friendly and we've actually been invited to the homes of people we met while traveling (several have become life long friends). The English we've met are hysterically funny and keep us in stitches.

Oh, I forgot one incident regarding an encounter in Paris. The owner of the rental car agency told me the car we could afford would be perfect for us. But when we got there it was so small we couldn't fit the suitcases in the car (not to mention the trunk). There weren't any other cars available so he gave us his personal (BEAUTIFUL BRAND NEW) Audi. I am not kidding! We loved that car and were very greatful for his kindness.
So I guess my point is people aren't that different around the world.
