what can you tell me about Frascati?
 

I am thinking about a possible day trip, or half day trip, depending on what there is to see/do/unique prizes to shop for..any suggestions?
oops, forgot to mention, this would be a day trip from Rome.
Also, for another day trip from Rome, what about Assisi?

the best time to go to frascati is the late afternoon. you can see the whole town quickly but the real deal is to be there after dark)-go eat supper- and go to the overlook and see all of the lights of rome spread out before you. it is quite impressive. there are several good places to eat so make an afternoon and evening out of it

But if you are not driving, check the train schedule for the last train back to Rome from Frascati before lingering too long over dinner.

Assisi is approx. two hours by train from Rome. I wouldn't do it, but if you are prepared to spend four hours in trains for about eight hours in Assisi, I suppose it's doable.

ttt--any good shopping or sightseeing there? I have read that there are gorgeous views of Rome in the evening, we will be in Rome mid May, considering daylight savings time, when does it usually get dark enough to truly appreciate the city lights? petertherabbit-you mentioned visit late afternoon....4 pm-ish? (16:00 for my euro fodo-buddies) I believe I saw the last train to Rome leaves a little after 9pm. Is this worth it as a 1/2 day trip? I did read it was the most popular of its region. Thanks

Frascati is a light, dry, pale yellow wine made from Malvasia, Trebbiano and Greco grapes. Goes well with soups, seafood, poultry, and light dishes. Serve chilled.

We stayed there for one night a couple of years ago, between staying in Tescany & flying home from Rome. It was an atmospheric enough small town but I don't there's much in the way of "sights" - we just wandered around a bit & had dinner. I gather it's very rarely clear enough to get a good view of Rome. So I'd say not worth a day out from Rome. But then I'd say nothing is worth a day out from Rome, unles you're staying for a month or more :-)

Frascati, and the whole of the Castelli Romani (the Roman Castles area south east of Rome, where the Romans go at weekends for good food and relaxation out of the hustle and bustle of Rome), is worth visiting. There are numerous small hillside towns, all with real character, and specialities. Ariccia, Castel Gandolfo, Albano, Genzanno etc. You can travel across to Tivoli, through the towns of Palestrina and Segni. Lazio has a lot more to offer than just Rome (as wonderful as the Eternal city is), and as a bonus, you get to see the real Italy
