What can you tell me about Beverly in Yorkshire - the place, not the person
 

I've been able to trace my husband's 7th GGFather to Beverly, just east of York, who was born there in 1635. We're planning a trip to the UK in September 2015 and, of course, Beverly will be a stop on our tour, as well as York.

I couldn't find a whole lot of information about the town, other than the Beverly Minster, so I'd appreciate any history or suggested sites to see around town and the environs. We like old stuff (Roman, castle, abbey ruins), modern technology (Falkirk Wheel) and history.

You are spelling the town incorrectly - maybe this is why you can't find much out about it. A quick google brings up lots of info including a locally produced leaflet all about the town and surrounds.
The correct spelling is Beverley.

The Pipe and Glass Inn nearby is excellent - we've had some lovely meals there.
Loads of things to do in the York and Beverley area - Castle Howard, Rievaulx, Byland, Whitby and Mount Grace Abbeys, Helmsley and Pickering Castles, Wheeldale Roman Road etc etc

We spent a pleasant couple of hours there in August, on our way back from York to Hull for the ferry home. Since there was a service in the Minster we didn't go in, but wandered around the town centre. Beverley Bar is an old town gate. The buses uses to be specially shaped to fit through it. No longer the case sadly. It was the first time in some forty years that we had visited. DH's Auntie was a conductor on the buses so we went on her bus one day just to go through the Bar :).
There is also a race track outside the town, which could be fun on a race day.
I can't imagine there being enough to see or do in the town for more than a few hours, unless there is a race meeting, but as Morgana says there is plenty to do in the surrounding area.

Beverley is a lovely market town still with a good range of traditional shops. There are some lovely old stone houses and Tourist Information have two town trails to follow.

The Minster is possibly the best Gothic church in Europe and is architecturally better than York.

It is also free to go in and there is a free car park across the road. You may even have the building to yourself. It is an incredible building, especially seen on a sunny day when the white stone glows.

As well as the Minster, Beverley has another good medieval church, St Mary's at the opposite end of town.

Go and find the carved rabbit on a doorway in the chancel which is supposed to be the inspiration for the White Rabbit in alice in Wonderland. The painted ceiling in the chancel with pictures of the Kings of England from Eggbert in 827 to Henry III who died in 1277 is great fun. The style, dress and facial features are remarkably similar on all of them.

Not mentioned earlier by Morgana is Burton Agnes Hall, about 30 minutes drive from Beverley, which is a lovely Elizabethan manor house with attractive gardens.

Across the Humber Bridge is Barton on Humber, another small town with a lot going for it and without the crowds of York.

We can't offer anything in the same league as the Falkirk wheel, but not mentioned in the above review is the Old Tile Works on the banks of the river Humber. This has been restored and is one of the last in Europe which still makes pantiles using traditional methods. However it was badly flooded at the beginning of the year and is still closed. If you are interested, it might be worth emailing them before you arrive to see if they are up and running again.

The walk across the Humber Bridge is popular with locals.

Hull has Wilberforce House, a slavery museum, and home of William Wilberforce.
There is also the Land of Green Ginger.
The Deep aquarium is a good way to pass an hour or two. It is close to the ferry terminal.
Hull used to be grim, but has improved enormously over the last few years.

Ohhh... Beverley with 3 e's. Thank you all for your information. I have a lot of research to do on this region. Unfortunately, the more I look, the more I want to see.

Hull centre is an interesting mix of medievel buildings (that survived the bombing of WW2), some pleasant 50s civil buildings and thenmajor destruction in the 70s which is slowly recovering. Even so the town has one of the largest and poorest housing estates in Europe to the north and yet has some amazing streets with grand central fountains (as per Paris). The population speaks with two strong dialects (both hard to understand East and West) and has strong Chinese and Albanian hidden crime families.

Along with the anti-slavery elements the council has a couple of fine art galleries/museums.

Despite the general poverty those born there seem to love it

Many years ago, my wife and I went to Beverley on a day trip from York and were very impressed by the town. We also went on a route that was described as the Beverley Round. Because it was a while ago and because age is doing bad things to my memory, I cannot give you any more information. I do know that we thought it was a super route. Perhaps someone reading your request can fill in what would be of use for you.
