What can you do for free in Paris?

This question is being asked for my nephew who is planning a trip to Paris, Rome and Madrid in May. As he and his traveling companion will be doing this trip on a shoestring budget he wanted some input as to what sites are low budget or free in these 3 cities.

He has a Eurorail pass, hostel arrangements and airfare already.

So Fodorites, any interesting suggestions for him. Thanks in advance as you all have helped me many times on my trips.

Free things in Paris include:

- Parks
- Churches
- Notre Dame tour
- Paris City museums, i.e.,Carnavalet, Victor Hugo's house, Palace of Justice, Petit Palais, Modern Art, Zadkine, Deportation Memorial, Balzac's house, Cognacq-Jay, Romantic Life, Bourdelle.
- Many other museums are free the first Sunday of the month. He should bring his student card for reduced prices.
- The admission to the Rodin Museum garden only is 1Euro and there are many sculpture in the garden.
- Louvre is free to under 26s on Friday night
- There are many free church concerts. They should buy a copy of Pariscope from a news kiosk to find other things of interest that may be free/inexpensive.

Just walking around Paris is free and a wonderful experience. The other young folks in the hostels will give advice on things to do.

I would suggest he gets copies of Let's Go guide books for these cities as they do a great job for people on low budgets including inexpensive restaurants.

Also, he can see organ recitals for free at some of the churches on Sundays. There is specific info in the following thread:

The above advice precludes the necessity for me to add anything other than to say that the city parks are also free. The Luxembourg Gardens are nice, and a good place for a lunch bought from a bakery.

My wife and I often would buy a sandwich from a bakery or La Brioche Doree and eat on a park bench, provided the weather was decent.

It was fun to sit there and watch what was going on.

adrienne: wow that was fast! Thanks for that info. I will pass it on.

Dejais: I forgot about those recitals, he should enjoy those.

Michel_Paris: I will pass along the website.

He was on a trip when in high school and I am not sure that he even went to some of the churches. He is 19 and in college so I will remind him about his student ID.

Sylviam...Also, I forgot to mention that when we were in Rome we were lucky enough to come across a universal orchestra practicing in a church one afternoon. We sat for quite some time and listened. If he wanders, he may find lucky "finds" such as this.
