What are your favorite restaurants in Chianti?
 

We are staying in Chianti (Greve) for a week. There are so many great restaurant recommendations I've found here, slowtrav, tripadvisor, etc. Which restaurants in the area are not to be missed?

A garden table at Il Canto del Maggio would be my perfect place to dine. Have eaten there three times and the food and setting are heavenly. It's in a tiny old village called Penna, perched up a hill near Terranuova Bracciolini, not far from Montevarchi.

We ate at a very small restaurant in Pievasciata (very small village) which was run by a Japanese couple. The sort of place you would drive past and not dare to go in. We actually ate outside on wooden tables - food came - best we have ever tasted. Tuscan country cooking - lamb was incredible. We asked where the very, very good wine came from (turns out to be £25 a bottle a home) she just pointed at the field over the road. Priceless moment.

We googled them on our return from home as the owner of the estate, where we were staying, mentioned something about their cooking. Turns out that they were Japans answer to Gordon Ramsey and had just sold their chain of restaurants.

Who needs a michelin star?

Cantinetta di Rignana--its way out in the countryside past Montefioralle. We had a fabulous meal there last December and I can still recall the taste of the crostone con lardo. Ours was a very intimate and quiet experience but it has a large outside deck and dining area.

In Panzano, do not miss Dario Ceccini's butcher shop and adjoining restaurants. We will be back there for a "MacDario hamburger" again this June.

jc80, we loved our dinner at La Castellana (it is described in the first link that zoecat gave you, above). Our b&b-style agriturismo was up the road; we walked there for dinner. Very cozy, friendly, and my dinner (best translation I could get was 'pork cooked in the typical style') was fabulous. I tried to recreate the recipe (red peppers? Cream?) but never got it right.

Road from Greve is windy, so consider that if you are enjoying some wine/drinks. We were happy to just have to walk home!

The place we stayed was a lovely farmhouse w/ just a couple of accommodations: Podere Torre. Roses, grapevines, views, peace, and the lovely Cecilia to take care of you.
