Well, let's get our international geography straight here: Annecy is in FRANCE, not Switzerland. Having said that I will add that it is one of the prettiest towns I've been in and I'd recommend it to visitors. The other towns I've not yet visited, so I reserve judgement. Joan
I recently spent three weeks in Switzerland, two of them in an apartment in Hasliberg-Reuti. If you are interested in an "authentic" tiny village, Reuti fills the bill. It is at the end of the road on the Hasliberg, reached by postbus from Brunig Pass. From Reuti, there is a lift going down to Meiringen and one going further up the mountain ( actually a series of three going up). Brienz is also a charming small town- on the Brienzersee - friendly people, good restaurants, interesting shops ( especially for wood carvings), a nearby open air museum, a cog railway up the mountain, and a dock for lake boats. Trips further up into the Alps Schilthorn, Jungfraunoch, etc.) are easy from either Reuti or Brienz. Unless you are interested in a busy city atmosphere, I would choose one of these, or other similar ones instead of Interlaken or Luzern.

From Luzern, a beautiful, historic lakeside city, you can take a 1 hour train ride to Engelburg (end of the line). Engelburg is a beautiful mountain village. Though ski-oriented, there is a gondola to take you to top of the mountain. Take lots of film, the sights are breathtaking, even from the train which at one point is cog driven to make it up the grade.

Along the same route, you might want to stop in Stans. A small, but growing village (they parade the cows down from the mountain pastures in September).
You can walk the whole of Stans in 45 minutes. Recommend relaxing with pils in the Hotel Engel which is on the village square.
Enjoy,
MJ Murphy
If you're in Interlaken I'd highly recommend a trip to nearby Lauterbrunnen. It's a beautiful village set in a valley with steep, high mountainsides with waterfalls cascading down. The scenery is just stunning. There is one waterfall particular where you can climb up the side of the mountain and stand behind it and get thoroughly wet. Lots of fun! We would have liked to have driven further up the valley, but didn't have enough time.

Luzern, and its surrounding countryside, are most beautiful. My wife and I spent a week in the area there in late April. A bit chilly, yes, but the views from Mount Pilatus (in nearby Krienz) were simply incredibly. With a rental car and a good map you can cirle the expansive lake area to such quaint towns as Brennan and Zug.
To me, you can't go wrong in Switzerland!
