Intermittantly doing work work (from home) and planning our forthcoming RTW trip. Multiple browser screens along with Excel and Word - ain't it a hoot? Bouncing between long spreadsheets of farkakte numbers that don't improve no matter how long I stare at them, and pictures of lodges in the Sabi Sands reserve near Kruger Park. Oh the humanity.

Bedtime here in South Africa. Lying in bed and surfing the web! What more can one ask for? Oh yes, maybe a glass of good SA wine.

Two buck chuck for some reason I think is sold for three bucks on the East Coast. Not sure why.

Yellowtail is the housewine in my house. Good table wine for 4.99. But having an Aussie significant other, I have grown accustomed to Australian wine in general. Almost all the wine I have in my house is Australian...weird considering I live in California and we have very nice wines.

For those of you who have Trader Joe's, there is a Columbia Crest 2001 Shiraz which rated 90 in Wine Spectator. It sells for 4.99 as well. My friend told me about it so I will check it out later today when I get off work.

As for what I am doing...I am currently in budget and forecast hell.

Degas,

It's (it was) a riesling kabinett trocken from a famous plot of land called Kirchenstück. If you're familiar with the Pfalz, you'll know this is the best plot there is. Many vineyards actually share this plot, where each get a few rows of grapes. This particular bottle is very reasonably priced (~8 Euro) compared to other vineyards' Kirchenstück offerings. The Bürklin-Wolfe Kirchenstück won best German riesling for 2003 (I think), and that's a 50 Euro bottle (unfortunately sold out before it was even bottled!). I often buy from that vineyard and know the head salesman there (a Brit), but I've never tasted it...just too expensive, considering all other cheaper and good options out there.

we're just about to dig into homemade Wienerschnitzel and pommes frites with a side of wild preiselbeeren (cranberries). My sister-in-law arrived today, so we had to make her a good meal!

I've tried to do the Atkins thing here, but it's just about impossible in Germany. After 3 weeks of being a good boy, I blew the diet at our anniversary dinner last night:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34522688

so, the breading on the schitzel and the french fries will be a welcome treat!

carlosSandoval, I discovered yellow tail chardonnay last summer when I returned to the USA for a few months. I agree, for the price, it is super value. The 1 liter bottle really goes a long way when there are multiple drinkers. I did try the merlot, and thought it was so-so, but chardonnay is worth a drink. Good vanilla undertones, if I remember correctly.

tapatricco, what ever happened to TWO-buck chuck at Trader Joes? Is it simply inflation? I thought the economic indicators yesterday reported a decrease in inflation of 0.1 percent...perhaps they don't track the wine markets? ;-)

TGIF Fodorites,
It's approaching 4:00 in the afternoon in my little corner of the world.
I'm day dreaming a bit.
I'm alternating peeking at Fodors and looking out my window. Outside my window I can see the leaves on the dogwoods have begun to show a bit of red. There's a gentle rain falling and the temp is about 73F. The sky has that autumnal look to it. I happen to love autumn; so maybe that's why I'm daydreaming and not devoting my full attention to the tasks I need to be attending.
I'm meant to be updating a database and reviewing plans for a big annual outdoor artshow I help produce, The art show will be in full swing 6 weeks from today. And I have sooooooo much to do before then. Ack!!
One week after the show I'm off to London, Paris, and the Languedoc region. Yayyyy.
My husband phoned a few minutes ago to inquire if I were interested in having dinner at our favorite causal restaurant this evening... as if! ;-)

No problem. I hope you have it. Sometimes my friend's trader joe's doesn't have the same stuff down here in SoCal. Who knows if it's really good or not.

And does anyone know why two buck chuck is a buck more on the east coast? I haven't been able to find out why.

Hello from Hot & Humid Florida.
We are just back from lunch on the water, bought some Sockeye Salmon and a McKenzie (Sheila!) Pinot Noir for dinner.
Starting to research how many and which Oregon wineries to visit on our trip in September~
Have a good evening

Hi Carlos,
>has anyone tried YELLOW TAIL - cab or merlot - australian wine? pretty good, and decent price here in the States ?<

Yellow Tail Chard came out at $4.99 in Atlanta. VG wine for the price.

It is now up to $7.99. Still a good $4.99 wine.

What am I doing right now.

Watching Molto Mario.

I shall then feed the cats.

I will then prepare dinner.

A salad of baby greens with with pear slices, Pecorino Romano, Mortadella and ginger.

Grilled wahoo with a sauce of shrimp in white wine/butter/ginger/shallots; served with sauteed fennel and cucumber.

Wine is a Reisling (an Orvieto is in reserve).

Dessert will be a plum and a piece of chocolate from Russia.

It is possible to eat well in the US.

I'm going a little crazy. I have 1 week until I go on holiday and I've got so much work to do before I leave. I'm a consultant and right now I'm writing specs for a whole pile of programs that someone will have to write when I'm away. All week I've been really pushing on, no lunches, etc. It's not been fun. I can't wait for that vacation!

Planning my vacation to Italy in October when I should be researching contract law - I am a boring ol' lawyer. Just 2 more hours til quittin time!

And am looking forward to an "it's all about me" evening tonight - curling up with a good book tonight and glass of wine (perhaps YT Shiraz -- one of my favorites!!) I'm thinking about skipping dinner tonight and going right to dessert. One of the pleasures of adulthood.

Carlos,
Yellow Tail is a decent, value wine as are many of the Australian (and Chilean) wines.

Here is a real tip - Thorn Clarke - Terra Barossa Shiraz 2001. If you can find it, it is under $10/bottle. I've had several bottles from the same vintage but from different case lots. Some bottles are very good, others have been spectacular. I'm not sure what would account for the variations, but in any event, a very good wine.

What's for dessert, seaside?

For many years my Lady Wife and I were regulars at a restaurant. I would often say that I would rather start with dessert and, If I had room, I would eat dinner.

One night, we wnt out for my birthday. LW ordered. The waitress said that she had a special birthday dinner for me.

LW had crab cakes.

I had a double order of fudge brownie with coffee ice cream and chocolate sauce.

One of the best dinners I've ever had.

I have been wasting time on the computer today. My shift was cancelled again due to low patient caseload so I am at loose ends. Because of no work I am becoming financially distressed which is not good as we are leaving for Ireland two weeks from today.

Channel surfing, watching lame American movies on Flemish TV stations, waiting for husband to come home (evening conference call with clients in Dubai), mentally decorating the cottage in Maidenhead (UK) we're moving to at the end of next month, mourning that the supply of wine we bought in Sancerre last month is rapidling diminishing, IOW, just hanging out.

Scarlett,
My sister lives just south west of Portland, OR. They've had a hot humid summer out there; many days it was hotter there than in Louisville where I live. Hardly seems fair does it? ;-)
As to wineries, just do them all. LOL The Willamette River valley is full of wineries, and fruit orchards. Add some Tillamook cheese and you've got yourself a fine picnic.
