What are these little things called in Europe?
 

In 2003 I bought DH a small, flat, black leather coin purse/pouch while in (I think) Paris. It opens on its own leather hinge-holds coins in one half (with flap to hold coins in place, and neatly closes on itself. Make sense? (no pun intended) I know they sell them various places in Europe. I need another one and don't know the correct name in order to find them on the internet. Any ideas??

It's called a porte-monnaie in French.

check bardo's link, it is the right one. It is very common in France. I have one that I use only to put pounds when I go to London so I don't mix €/£ :-)

MyriamC--input the title "porte-monnaie" into my yahoo search and up popped many sites and, as you indicated, there are many types of these little jewels. I did locate one--a bit out of my budget though--a Louis Vultton for $390.00!! Humm--I seem to remember paying about $15 or less in 2003--mine definitely NOT a Louis Vultton!! LOL

Hi - I bought a red leather coin purse/wallet in Florence at one of the markets. I paid about $15 for it. It has 2 snap closures, one is a coin purse and the other will hold bills, a credit card and my drivers' license. And it fits in my pocket. I wish I had bought a couple of them for gifts.

cigalechanta--NOW I get kappa's reference!! Guess I'm glad I don't smoke so I can use the "butt pouch" for coins in lieu butts. Great site for enlightening one (me) in the environmental reasons for using said pouch. I, for one, detest cigarette butts thrown out vehicle windows, into the street, etc. This little unit is a great idea!

It's absolutely mindboggling all the various shapes, colors, and prices for containers in which to store our money so it will be safe until we see the next thing to spend it on--hopefully in Europe! I love PARIS too--and London--and Venice---and--

I love those squeeze types like in the link by bardo, but I've never had one with the outside pocket before. At home all my change goes in a big bottle at night, but in Europe I find myself with tons of coins all the times, and I hate it when they fall out of my pockets when I sit down or when I take off my pants.

I looked all over a couple of leather markets and also in Covent Garden last trip (that's where I bought one before) but couldn't find one anywhere.

As much as I hate buying stuff off the internet, Carol Wright may have just made a sale.

In Italy they are "porta monete".
